Hi Cat, I have one and I think its great!  The only problem I have with it is I

can't actually down load books without hooking it up to the computer because

Montana (where I live) isn't able to connect the divice.  Anyway I am sure you

would love it too.

Subject: OT- Amazon Kindle

I was wondering if anyone on the list owned a Kindle. I am looking into

purchasing a Kindle DX from Amazon. My bookshelves in my house have gotten

way out of control. I figure this is a great way to carry MANY books with me

at one time, and cut down on clutter. Does anyone have a Kindle experience

to share? Was it good or bad??

Thanks!

Cat

My teacher has one. He says he reads 2-3 books a week. He loves it. You can

read it outside, the battery lasts forever, you can download books anywhere w/o

any subscription, and you can even convert .txt or .pdf books to fit the kindle.

It can read to you, and if very lightweight. He was sold on it for sure.

Hi Cat,

I have a Kindle, and absolutely love it!!

In addition to all that's been said below, I love the fact that one can look up

word definitions as you are

reading; just move the cursor to the word, and a

definition appears at the bottom of the page!!! I can't tell how many words

I've looked up - words that I would never have looked up (because I might be

reading on the train, on my way to work, without a dictionary handy).

I also find that many classics are free, and that even more recent books are

incredibly affordable.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you all for your comments as I too was interested in one! My Mom loves to

read and I was debating on getting her one for Christmas. I think I am sold.

I also have a Kindle. Love it. It was wonderful when we went to France in May;

no wondering how many books I needed to slog along in my carry-on to get me

through airport waits and the 9 1/2 hour flight. I see now they have knocked

$60.00 off of the price.........it figures, after I buy. Would love to have the

DX, but not for that kind of bucks. A larger screen would be nicer, tho; but

this will have to suffice.

I keep it in my purse, never know when I will have to wait somewhere and can

polish off a few pages.

This sounds interesting. Are the prices of the books that are downloaded

comparable to purchasing a hardback or paperback?

Interesting conversation.  I don't have a Kindle but I have a Creative Zen MP3

player.  I drive a long way to work and download audio books all the time.  I

listen to it while driving, mowing the lawn, riding my bike and occasionally

when working out. (I usually like music for that).

Most libraries have downloadable books for free, an almost neverending supply

depending on what you like.  They have tons of mysteries, drama, autobiographies

etc.

Creative Zen is a great quality device and not expensive and a huge savings

considering the cost of books!  Make sure you get one with bookmarks as alot of

these default to the beginning and lose your place.  Sandisk has a ton of cheap

ones that are a waste of money so don't bother with them unless you buy their

upper end model.

Get one around 8G and you can hold tons of books without having to download all

the time.

Any questions just ask.  Oh and you can download for the Kindle from the library

as well!

Andy,

There are tons of free books and most new releases and best sellers are 9.99 or

less. Plus I see it as an environmentally friendly way to read. No tree

killing!!

I'm totally sold!!

I'm hoping to order one by the end of the month.
