The problems caused by inappropriate administration (time lag of more than 4 hours between doses) don't necessarily happen right away - they can build up. He told us that he often saw this in older women and was often due to zinc deficiency, but that her case was not that severe or it would be called peri-orificial dermatitis. He also said to avoid topical steroid creams (which we did not use), and unofficially mentioned flourides in toothpaste. At the time (July 1998) we were treating her mainly with nicotinamide, due in part to Dr. Shaw's test results which had consistently indicated possible (unlikely) Hartnup's disorder (increased 3-Indoleacetic - a tryptophan metabolite - due likely to bacterial production in the GI tract, or unlikely due to Hartnup's) We have not seen this rash for a long time now, although sometimes we noted that the areas adjacent to her lip would turn red, kind of like poorly applied lipstick, or the upper perimeter of her lips showed a dark outline. This redness was always short-lived and actually I haven't seen it for awhile either. I don't want to speak too soon, but this may be one of the things that we have cleared up with mercury detox?!
