I am assuming when you say he buckles at the carpus you mean he is hypoflexed

and standing virtually upright. Digging and swimming are going to build

primarily the flexors. Does this dog have normal digits? By that I mean is

there any limitations in the digits themselves or does it appear to be limited

to the carpus?

Subject: Adult dog did not outgrow carpal flexural abnormality

Hi all! Last week a colleague of mine showed me a 1 year old pit bull that had

carpal flexural abnormality as a pup, but has not outgrown it. When he stands,

his front legs buckle at the carpi. He can't run and play for long. Does anyone

have any thoughts on how to help him? All of the previous posts I've seen are

about puppies and say that they will out grow this.

I thought carpal support wraps might help, especially for when he wants to go

out to play.

Also, what are some good exercises for strengthening this area? So far I thought

of digging in sand and swimming. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Actually when he stands, his front legs shake a bit and then he buckles at the

carpus and is hyper flexed at the carpus but doesn't fall down. His digits are

normal and all of the rest of his joints are normal.

Thanks for your quick reply!

In that case carpal wraps would be great or depending on the severity hyper

extension orthotics would be an option as well. Those exercises for

strengthening would be great. Carpal arthrodesis would also be a last option

although one that would be preferable to avoid.

June,

Most of the time this is a problem due to bone length growth in excess of soft

tissue, flexor muscles and tendons. It does usually self correct, with proper

dietary adjustments, decrease in protein and calories. This dog is somewhat

older than normal however if physeal regions are still open then not too old.

Passive and active stretching exercise combined with devices that counter

flexion when non-weight bearing can help. Most of the time these are treated

with professional neglect but a device made of orthoplast that can be remolded

to increase extension as needed maybe of assistance. Do you have radiographs?

What is the standing angle at the carpus? When the carpus is in full extension, are the digits also extended? Is there pain on extension of the carpus and/or digits anywhere (including over the tendons just distal to the accessory carpal bone/retinaculum?Can you post pictures?TeriSubject: Adult dog did not outgrow carpal flexural abnormalityTo: VetRehab Date: Monday, July 23, 2012, 6:40 PM
