I don't think there is a true test to justify trying Valtrex. Some

docs don't want to prescribe it unless a kid shows high viral titters

for certain viruses. Our son had some high titters, but not nearly as

high as what I have heard some kids have from parents on this list.

I think it is worth a try because Valtrex is one of the safer drugs

that we can try with our kids. If you do not see any type of

improvement within 3 months, you will probably not see any. I would

give it a try for at least that amount of time.

  • 1 month later...

After hearing Dr. JM speak yesterday on Valtrex/Herpes virus, I want to see if

my son's pediatrician will prescribe a course of it. Unfortunately, we have

Kaiser for insurance and our mainstream pediatrician is VERY mainstream. Does

anyone have an idea of how I could explain to her about our kids and brain

viruses? I'd really appreciate any ideas/feedback. Thank you.

Jane:

Bacteria has many parts, thus, giving a medicine that kills any of those parts, kills the bacteria. With viruses, there are too few of parts to target, thus making killing them difficult. Plus mainstream medical does not recognize herbal antivirals, but only medicines that inhibit viral reproduction. Valtrex works like the other prescription so-called antivirals, which really only inhibit reproduction. There are probably other reasons as well, like viruses being smaller; they can hide better.

My 4 y/o son is mildly improving daily but we have yet to go the

anti-viral route. I understand that many people have seen some

large strides with Valtrex.. but I've also noticed that some people

have had their child on Valtrex for over 6 months. Why so long?

Doesn't the Valtrex knock out the offending virus(es) within a few

weeks like antibiotics do with bacteria?

Also, if I may make a request - as I am still a neophyte in the biomed

world would it be possible for group members to (at least once)spell

out the treatments they are employing instead of typing only the

initials? Often on this site when I am reading I don't know what

people are talking about because only the acronyms are used. (i.e.

ALA instead of alpha lipoic acid) I feel foolish for asking but I hope

to learn as much as possible.

Many thanks!

You may not be seeing much in the way of behavior but you are clearly getting positives if he has a rash.  You could bump up to 1500 if you feel you want to try a higher dose.  I wouldn't go any higher than, though.  1500 is the highest dosage given that I know of for his weight.  No, you don't need to crush it.  Just give it a bit more time (at least another month or two) and pull titers.  See if there's anything happening there.  If not, you could switch to another antiviral. Cheryl~ http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com ~ Hello,My son is 5years old and weighs 44 lbs.  Ihave been givig him valtrex for about 50 dauys now and am not sure I,m seeing very much.  I'v been giving him 250 mg in the morning and at noon and 500 mg at night.  I've been washing the blue off, but not crushing them as he swallows them.  Are they supposed to be crushed?  He does have a rash, a red patch above each glute, but it has not moved and there is no rash anywhere else   We tested him for Herpes and he does have the virus.  He also has lead from the paint in our house (which has been removed).  We have been working with a DAN doctor for over a year and are doing SCD, chelation, supps, B12 shots, probiotics. glutathione and anti-fungals.  We are currently using Amph B but have also used Sporonox, Difllucan, and Nyzorale.  He doesn't seem to tolerate the Diflucan, he gets a red rash around his mouth and his lips dry out and crack.  I noticed a rash above his lip with the Nyzorale this las time, but he also had a cold wih a runny nose so I'm not sure it was the Nyzorale. Am I giving him the right dose for his weight or should I be doing something different? Thanks, Amy

What is the anti viral for?

What tests did you take to know?

I am just new to this game.

Re: valtrex

Antivirals is a long term therapy because they don't kill the virus, they inhibit replication. When replication is inhibited, it's up to the immune system to do the rest of the work and generally, if they have viruses, they have a very weak immune system. My son has been on them for 2 years now just to give you an idea of how long it can take.

As far as acronyms, you're best bet is to just ask when you don't understand what something means. Believe me, we've all been where you are so no one will think less of you for asking. :)

Valtrex, Famvir and Zovirax are for treating herpes viruses.  Many of our immune kids have high viral titers to any of the herpes viruses that are latent.  Stealth virus, if you will.To test you would pull viral titers HHV 1- 6.  Low titers doesn't necessarily mean you don't have viral issues, though.  Also good to pull an immune panel, too.   Cheryl~ http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com ~ What is the anti viral for? What tests did you take to know? I am just new to this game. Ginger   Re: valtrexAntivirals is a long term therapy because they don't kill the virus, they inhibit replication.  When replication is inhibited, it's up to the immune system to do the rest of the work and generally, if they have viruses, they have a very weak immune system.  My son has been on them for 2 years now just to give you an idea of how long it can take.As far as acronyms, you're best bet is to just ask when you don't understand what something means.  Believe me, we've all been where you are so no one will think less of you for asking.  :)Cheryl~ http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com ~On Feb 24, 2009, at 2:20 PM, Jane Enrietto Horn wrote:HIMy 4 y/o son is mildly improving daily but we have yet to go theanti-viral route.
