Guest guest
Hello everyone! I'm a "new person" - I came across the article in the NYT yesterday and have been reading the website and other articles. It's pretty amazing after 48 plus years to discover there are many others who have this condition. My grown daughter suffers from it as well, as did my father, so I figured there might be a genetic component. But I'd never heard of anyone else. So nice to know we are not alone! I have had Misophonia for 28 years without ever knowing what it was or that it had a name (I always assumed it was part of PTSD I had-- which I've been cured of, except for the continued problem with chewing sounds). I sent this article right away to my parents (I couldn't eat dinner with my dad for years and had so many screaming fights with him as a teenager) and my husband so they know I'm not just "too sensitive." This explains why I have to get up and move to a different table when dining out if the person sitting at the table nearby is chewing too loudly and why I've had to move out of a few different apartments due to low-pitched humming noises no one else can hear. Thank you so much!! > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Welcome aboard! There are lots of us like you, who went through decades of thinking we were the only ones, until finding out about misophonia on the Internet. It's a great feeling when you suddenly realise you are not alone! The NYT comments are on the left near the top of the article, where it says " Well " , just under the yellow picture of someone blowing bubble gum. > > > > > > > > > Just want to THANK YOU for writing this article. Guest guest
Wow, Adah! I can’t believe we are finally getting this out to the public in mass quantity! Thank you for all you do—seeing doctors, being a guinea pig, and now going on national television! (Plus I get to see who you are after all these years of being in the group together! Guest guest
BTW, for those who came or are part of the Hyperacusis Network, we are taking quite a bashing over there. The main moderator is, well, doing his thing. It would be helpful for me if some of you, if you feel like, might take a moment if you ARE on the board, and try to help illuminate the place of darkness that just will not leave that site, so sad about that. It seems like a kind of personal vendetta. Sorry to bring this in light of such great news but again, this has been the long standing case over there. Ok, any brave souls, thanks in advance. Guest guest
I just went and found the board and the thread. And oh my goodness.First reaction was " let me create an account and set this guy straight " The very next thought was " it won't do any good--he's acting like a child and no amount of discussing or arguing will change his mind " Not worth it to put my energy into it. Someday he will see he is wrong and doesn't know it all. --------------------------------------------------------- ♥ " Hope is more than a word; it's a state of being. Guest guest
Wow Heidi, I'm in a whirlwind, and a bit out of the loop of conversations on this group as I've just discovered it this morning. I had no idea until the last couple of days that there were others like me, and have been convinced that I may just be an awful passive aggressive, control freak. I hope you have a fabulous trip to NY, and all the confidence of a bonafide weirdo I've had severe " misophonia " for 16 years. Only in the last couple of years have I even built up the courage to tell close friends in hopes for some sensitivity or understanding. I imagine you may have felt this as well, and suffered from resentment from people who are not happy after a while to be conscious of their effect on you. I'm not sure what your roll on the show will be, but I hope you'll enjoy the time to speak out in a no-apologies manner! Take care, audrey > > > Just want to THANK YOU for writing this article. Guest guest
I posted comments to the article. Some of the comments were downright rude. If people only knew what we are going through. Right now my oldest just started college, and she is already having issues with her roommate's noises. This should be a happy time for her, and it's not, and I don't know how to help her. Worse, since I have it too, I feel like it's my fault she has this awful cursed condition! It's maddening.

Guest guest
sarah, the battle over on the HN has been going for YEARS. The board there is really for those with hyperacusis/tinnitus, but some with misophonia were there in the beginning... until most were chased away by the constant arguing. Long story short, a certain person there seems to believe he knows everything there is to know about Misophonia and refuses to see the good in this article, but rather points out all the " dead wrong " things. He has a right to his opinion, but whenever Dr. J posts anything there, he jumps on the personal war bandwagon with her and it's really quite irritating. Like Dr. J said, it really seems like a personal vendetta he has with her. I believe he wants to help those with misophonia, he just doesn't approach it in the right way. He's very knowledgeable but he's not a doctor. He did help me a great deal personally to learn CBT when I was one of the few remaining misophonics left on that site so I am grateful to him for that. However, I wish he would stop being so judgmental towards Dr. J and now the author of this article. Unless you enjoy confrontation, arguing, constantly being grilled, and having your own words edited, I'd avoid that website! Ha ha. > > > > > > BTW, for those who came or are part of the Hyperacusis Network, we are > > taking quite a bashing over there. The main moderator is, well, doing his > > thing.
