Guest guest
Why only once a week? Guest guest
-I don't know why only once a week, I have not had any professional advice and really don't know how often I should check them. I feel if I check them more it is like making a big deal of things like fussing over nothing or something like that. My numbers aren't dangerously high, usually in the 7's or high 6's in the mornings. I wish there was someone I could sit down with who would take me through things step by step. It is like being thrown into the ocean without a lifejacket sometimes. Guest guest
the best way is to check more often than once a week and in different times so that you may truly know what the status of your diabetes. The frequency of checking is very much benefitial to management and you must not discount that. If you would like to check less frequent better do it at different times so that if you look at your stats you have an am,pm,bedtime, after excercise vq Re: best time? > -I don't know why only once a week, I have not had any professional > advice and really > don't know how often I should check them. Guest guest
I'm not sure how 7's and 6's translate into the numbers I'm familiar with. If it corrosponds with the Hgb A1c numbers it would seem a bit high. BG's should run between 75 and 120 to be considered "normal"... this is the ultimate goal, to have normal bg's. 150 and over is known to possibly cause damage. 175 - 180 is the known kidney threshold where damage begins to occur there. Both fasting numbers and Post Prandial numbers (after meals) are important to know. The fasting numbers shows how your body is reacting to your regimen, the PP numbers show if your diet is working. In the beginning most Type II's are recommended to at least check their daily fasting bg's, and then check their pp numbers a minimum of three times a week after different meals. Personally I wouldn't be satisfied with only 3 times a week! I generally test fasting, and then at least after 1 meal a day. If you think that's a lot, imagine being type I and having to test 8 or more times every single day ! BTW, diabetes IS a big deal. If you don't have your numbers in control you run the risk of tremendous complications: blindness, amputations, severe infections that won't heal, kidney damage, dialysis, and death. If a 6 or 7 in the morning translates to somewhere around 150, then what do you think your bg might be AFTER you eat? If you don't test, you won't know. You say no one has told you when to check... where is y our doctor? If he isn't doing anything to help you, you need a new one (preferably an endocrinologist or diabetologist) as fast as you can find one! The ADA reccomends a minimum of 4 times a day. I check 8 times a day because I am on an insulin pump. Once a week is playing with fire. If your Dr. is directing you to do this... please get a second evaluation from another Dr. If you are broke, there are ways to get test strips that you need for free. --- WebBBS v1.22 : OurHearth Internet Services ( http://ourhearth.net/ )
Guest guest
Tammy, When you're first diagnosed, your body has gotten accustomed to high numbers. When you start striving for control, your body at first sees the better numbers as being too low! So at night, when you go your longest without eating, your liver kicks in glucose and thus you will sometimes see a higher morning bg. However, if you keep the bg's in line for several weeks this will adjust and you will see it will keep getting better and better. Guest guest
Thanks so much for the info Meenie and ! The diabetic counselor didn’t really give him a morning bg goal so I was worried. I will keep tracking it (or rather he will. J) His other goals are being met quite well though! Still, I have to say that 147 sure is better than the 600 that he started with! Thanks again!
