There is a Viral/Vaccine component that exists in many

children with autism. Gupta found high amounts of antibodies to

rubella in mothers of children with autism. According to Gupta,

these high amounts of antibodies would be transferred across

the placenta and an infant receiving a rubella immunization while

antibodies are still present, might cause the antibodies to react with

the rubella virus in the vaccine forming immune complexes

that " confuse " the immune system (4). Dr. Hugh Fudenberg, a clinical

immunologist (5), and Dr. A.J. Wakefield, a gastroenterologist, and

colleagues found symptoms of regression initiated with a MMR vaccination

in previously normally developing children later diagnosed with

autism. Electron microscopy has revealed live measles virus in the

intestinal lining of children with autism and lymphoid-nodular

hyperplasia (enlarged immune cells) in children with ADD and ADHD. All

the children with autism in Wakefield's study had

gastrointestinal abnormalities (6).

It has been well established these medical conditions are

the result of an Immune Deficiency of one kind or another.

Sudhir Gupta M.D. Ph.D., a clinical immunologist at the University

of California has found most children with autism have a

substantial immune abnormality of some type

(1).

It is well known the use of antibiotics promote yeast

overgrowth in the gut resulting in Yeast Infections. It is

also a common observation children with autism often have had a history

of ear

infections and earaches commonly treated with

antibiotics. A large part of the immune system is located

in or near the intestinal tract and helps to prevent germs in the

intestine from entering the rest of the body. According to

Shaw, Ph.D., a biochemist who has isolated a number

of yeast metabolites in the urine of children with autism,

defects in the immune system may lead to overgrowth of the

intestinal tract with organisms like yeast and clostridia (2).

With a significant immune deficiency, only one round of

antibiotics can promote the onset of yeast overgrowth.

This is how yeast manifests itself in so many immune related illnesses.

Unlike thrush and vaginal infections, yeast in the

intestine creates symptoms not likely to be more commonly

connected with a yeast infection. Shaw estimates test results for at

least 80% of the children and

adults he has tested, with autism or cross-related

conditions, come back positive for yeast infection.

Parents have observed in their children that bread and

milk products significantly increase negative behaviors and

symptoms. Pancreatic Insufficiencies and Malabsorption resulting in

Multiple Food Allergies have been documented as effecting virtually

100% of the autistic population. In Shaw's book,

Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD, he references Reichelt,

Shattock,

Dohan and Cade's numerous studies establishing elevated

urinary excretion of peptides derived from specific

proteins in milk and wheat in children with autism and adults with

schizophrenia.

Restrictions of these proteins from the diet cause

improvement in symptoms of this population (3). see Food Allergy

Symptoms. If there is incomplete digestion, it is possible there is an

Enzyme Deficiency. This is why a hormone such as secretin or

proteolytic enzymes may be beneficial as well as vitamin and mineral
