Jack and Jaquelyn and all the autism families,

J and J have a sense that I live the life of a starving (albeit chubby)

artist. That has been my life-choice since my early 30s. My " starving

artist " lifeway means that I usually work part-time as little as

possible so as to have as much time as possible for projects my spirit

feels to be worthy. Lucrativity often, even usually, takes a back seat

to significance. When I was enacting Independent Research at UCHSC in

Denver, I worked part-time at a used-books store and turned down

occasional pieces of various professors' larger grants - because

accepting such a role would have necessitated shutting down my own

research - and, even in early 1990s, I sensed that researchers in

mainstream medical academia (with few exceptions) were misdirecting

their energies, largerly via too much emphasis on the " MUST be genetic "

paradigm (while deliberately ignoring immune and environ factors, biomed

evaluations and related treatments). To this day, I have no IRA, no

significant savings, and when a tidy sum of cash comes my way, my first

thought is, How many months of research will that potentiate? Thus, I

still have 6 amalgams, no health insurance, etc - but I continue to find

a way each day to awaken into a research mode - directed towards

atypicalities of Developmental and Behavioral Neuroanatomy - a focus we

now realize includes many environmental factors and, in some families,

some very subtle, predisposing weak alleles that aren't specific to autism.

Thus, listmates now have some background for understanding J and J et

al's gesture of inviting me to the 2nd annual autism camp in Ojai - a

gesture I deeply appreciate.

Theresa,

I have felt that the amount of research that you read every day, and the way

that you distill all that information for us into just the most relevant

citations, is like a subscription to a pay-to-view website. I'd gladly pay 10

bucks/month to keep you here on this list, though I know you're not asking for

that. You are incredibly valuable to us. My humblest and deepest thanks to you.
