Guest guest
I have a question on the difference of supposedly the same ingredient, Panthenol Provitamin B5, received from two different companies. What is the difference between the two products and how do I use one over the other. I am confused over how and which one to use. · This one is labeled D-panthenol. INCI: D-pantothenyl alcohol. This is a clear viscous liquid from Somerset Cosmetic Co. This liquid is very thick and needs to be heated to measure and use. Recommended usage is .5-3%. · The other one is labeled dl Panthenol. INCI: Panthenol. It is a clear liquid that is already thin and can be used as is. This one is from The Herbarie Company. Recommended usage is .5-8%. Guest guest
Hi , If the D-panthenol you are getting from Somerset is d-pantothenyl alcohol as stated, I can tell you that their INCI designation is incorrect. The correct INCI name for d-pantothenyl alcohol or d-panthenol is simply " Panthenol " on your label. Here's a breakdown of 3 forms of panthenol, the first and third are what Somerset and The Herbarie sell. ONE: D-panthenol is 100% active. It stable to air and light, but not to heat, so repeatedly heating it to measure and use it is not a good idea. That's one of the reasons it can be difficult to use. While you generally need to use less of it in a formulation, it usually significantly more expensive. Here are a couple of links to industrial sources of this product: D-Panthenol USP is a colorless, clear, highly viscous, hydroscopic liquid that can solidify on prolonged storage. BASF indicates this product, properly stored, should be stable for 36 months. http://www.basf.com/businesses/consumer/cosmeticingredients/docs/d_panthenolusp.\ pdf RITAPAN D (Rita's brand name for D-Panthenol) or Pantothenyl Alcohol occurs as a colorless, viscous liquid which is slightly hygroscopic. It has a characteristic odor and has a bitter taste. It is soluble in water and alcohol. RITAPAN D is sensitive to heat. Shelf life at 20°C is at least 12 months. RITAPAN D is not stable when exposed to strong acids and bases. http://www.ritacorp.com/SPECS%20PDF/FLAVINOIDS,%20CO-ENZYMES%20 & %20VITAMINS/Rita\ pan%20D.pdf TWO: DL-Panthenol is the racemic form of D-panthenol or pantothenyl alcohol. It is a powder that is 50% active. It is hygroscopic (absorbs water from the air) and should be stored tightly sealed or it will form a hard solid and be difficult to use and measure. RITAPAN DL is dl-Panthenol which is the racemic form of Pantothenyl Alcohol. This material is a white to creamy white powder. Another industry accepted term is provitamin B-5. RITAPAN DL has a principal use in hair thickening and moisturization. http://www.ritacorp.com/SPECS%20PDF/FLAVINOIDS,%20CO-ENZYMES%20 & %20VITAMINS/Rita\ pan%20DL.pdf THREE: DL-Panthenol can also be purchased pre-mixed 1:1 with water, for formulation ease. It is 25% active and quite stable. That is the product The Herbarie sells. Of the three, it is probably the easiest to use in formulating and the easiest to store. RITAPAN DL 50% is a clear and slightly yellowish liquid http://www.ritacorp.com/SPECS%20PDF/FLAVINOIDS,%20CO-ENZYMES%20 & %20VITAMINS/rita\ pan%20dl%2050%25.pdf When using any of these products, the amount you use can be adjusted accordingly.
