Guest guest
Hi Steve -- My biggest problem about losing weight is my lack of mobility. Walking and even just getting up from a chair can be painful to my knees and elbow. I saw a show on TLC called the 650 pound virgin. The guy lost over 400 pounds. He had a trainer who is now his best friend. I would love to see short webisodes about how to exercise when you're fat. Exercise tapes just don't get it. They don't understand what it's like to be morbidly obese let alone super morbidly obese. Santone Framingham, MA Hello again all,I'm posting this message because I'd like your input on a project I'm working on. I can't get into the nitty-gritty about it, but can tell you the basics. Hopefully that will be enough information to get the collective creativity of the group flowing.I'm working with a couple of interesting people on creating several short "webisodes" which explore different aspects of being overweight. Subjects like; how one adapts their behaviors to cope with being heavy, what social factors contribute to staying heavy, exploring what good nutrition actually is, why people have so much trouble changing habits?, are we a diet culture?, Fat Liberation movements, and the effects of weight-loss surgery, to name a few. Please let me know what subjects you would like to see covered. Any suggestions of alternative weight-loss techniques, effective exercise programs, or anything that is related to the life of an obese person. If you know of someone who has an interesting story that you think others would benefit from, then let me know about them. Don't be afraid to offer up your suggestion, if you think it matters someone else probably does as well. So feel free to add whatever you think and I will try and find a place for it in a webisode.ThanksSteve

Guest guest
Steve, it would be interesting to explore the effects of advertising and the mass media on eating and weight control. The other day I was watching The Biggest Loser and one of the commercials was rom Arby's. They were advertising 5 beef and cheddar sandwiches for $5.55. There were other fast food commerials too. It was rather sickening that these companies seem to prey on overweight people like this. Also I am interested in the topic of heart disease, diabetes, and other obesity related illnesses. I read something the other day about needing to find a cure for diabetes, but it seems to me that the cure for these diseases are exercise and proper diet. Lastly, I think we need to change the negative connotations for the word diet. Diet is simply what you eat every day. Everyone is on a diet, some healthy and others not healthy. If I can help in any way let me know! Thanks, . Guest guest
I like this idea a lot. I think there is a lot of things gone wrong with responsibility in this society. Starting with the individual and ending with the enablers who are taking advantage. Great suggestion , thanks. > > > > Subject: Looking for input. > To: thefatmanwalking_group > Date: Friday, July 24, 2009, 12:43 PM > > > > > > > Hello again all, > > I'm posting this message because I'd like your input on a project I'm working on. Guest guest
, I'm very happy you suggested this one. It's a subject that few people have put much thought into outside of the medical field. I am going to pose this question to a few qualified people I know. Great idea. > > Hi Steve -- > > My biggest problem about losing weight is my lack of mobility. Guest guest
Aleta, There is nothing like personal experience to motivate a person. I've wondered about this myself from time to time. I was told once, " Hey, if you've given up then why should I try for you? " It was a remark that stayed with me for a long time. I wonder if that isn't the case with most medical people when dealing with obesity? Let's find out. Guest guest
I just read an article in Woman's day that said body concerns are now starting with children as young as 4, and most girls by age 9 when these body concerns used to start between 12 and 14. (sorry if I might be off a year or 2 on the years, I don't remember years very well, but you get the gist of the article). laurie > > > > > > From: Vaught <vaught1@> > > Subject: Looking for input. > > To: thefatmanwalking_group > > Date: Friday, July 24, 2009, 12:43 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello again all, > > > > I'm posting this message because I'd like your input on a project I'm working on. Guest guest
There was a guy on the Today Show this morning who was pushing his book. He lost about 40 lbs and now that he is a skinny expert, his advice is to just eat right and exercise. That's all he had to offer and, it works! Look! He's skinny so he knows! I wanna smack these SOBs right upside the head. Yeah, we all know it works. Now how does one manage that when their body is always rebelling against them, is what I want to know. Guest guest
Hi Folks, The guy on TV was right losing weight is all about diet and exercise. I've been on lots of diets. They all worked, For a little while, Then I failed once again. Or was it the diet, I guess it was me, I've since decided. It must be something besides Knowledge. As a child yet another family member was teaching me how to swim, I told her I already knew how to swim, I just couldn't do it. Some time after that I did figure out how to swim. Some day I'll learn how to lose weight as well. A couple months ago I started over once again, with a little different attitude, I'll have to deal with food and exercise the rest of my life, So, I'm trying to train myself to do that in a way that will last that long, In this quest I'll have my ups and downs, But each experience will be a way of learning one, I have the rest of my life to learn, I know I'll need that long. I also know how well I do today will be a factor in how long that will be, I truly believe no one can tell me how to do it, No one really knows, Have a great day, Bob All I want to know is why do I binge!! Guest guest
I'm getting ready to try the clean eating there is a magazine. It's just cooking for your self it looks like. My daughter has never been able to look weight, she had done all the diets, personal trainer (650.00) a month for 9 months, done the Craig to go along with it. Now she is in boot camp it's a exercise thing they go each night she has done this for 3 months and is doing wonderful, She has in like size 22 or 24 and now she is size 18. She eats all organic, she has had a skin condition with red bumps and it's gone now to. Yes they work hard at the boot camp but she said the gym was worse on her. Here is OK it close like 250 a month for the boot camp. I so wish I could do that but you have to be in good health. My knees won't let me stand or run. I would like to see someone come up with something people in wheel chairs can do. Sharon LeVine http://sharonsfamilylife.blogspot.com/http://www.lymphland.com/ Re: Looking for input. Guest guest
Here's my two cents. Although I can not talk about what makes you tick personally , biologically there has always been a imperative in humans for salts, fats, and sugars. This has always interested me and I know that it's where my failing lives. In our development salts, fats, and sugar, were the things our brains craved to make sure we got enough of the nutrients needed for survival. I'm not talking about what we craved while standing in the middle of a 7/11, a bit further back, as we developed from the first humanoids, before we knew about nutrition we simply understood cravings. They propelled the survival of our species, now they might be thinning out the herd. Excuse the pun. So fast forward a few thousand years and you'll see that over time we went from foragers to living in a processed world. Everything should be different now that we're " evolved " right?! Turns out, not so much. We still posses the basic cravings which compels us to seek out salts, fats, and sugar. But thanks in large part to economy, processing, and irresponsible living, were are like crack addicts now. Instead of these cravings directing us to food and therefore nutrition, it becomes about pleasure and ultimately abuse. It's the food that beckons you. Food processors and manufacturers have one purpose in life-TO SELL FOOD. They must do this to survive. So they load up everything with salts, fats, and sugars because that's what we buy. In turn, this of course load us up because it makes us feel good (Like crack) and the cycle of abuse begins. Overtime it becomes second nature to eat crap, so much so that we cannot even admit that we do it. I have heard a lot of things in this group that illustrate that point, I've said a few of them myself. " I guess I overeat " , " I sometimes eat too much " , " I think I need to eat better things " , etc. We all know the better health/weight loss equation (Eat less, move more.) but not why it fails to work for us. The answer is staring us in the face. We are addicted to salts, fats and sugars. We are addicted to our food. So the solution is equally as clear. Change the quality of the food. Get the brain detoxed from sugars and salts, the body from fats. The rub here is; How? Google " salts, fats, and sugar " there is tons of information. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/26/AR2009042602711.\ html > > All I want to know is why do I binge!! Guest guest
Sharon, Organic food has been on my mind for a while. I bitch about it all the time. Why is it that we label the stuff that grows out of the ground as " Organic " and the crap that we produce as " food'? Shouldn't it be the other way around. Organic is how nature intended it. Why is that special now, and more expensive. It's all upside down. And the best exercise for you it seems would be swimming. It's a full body exercise, very low stress and almost no impact on the knees. Didn't we talk about that before? Steve > > > All I want to know is why do I binge!! Guest guest
i know kind of mixed up isn't it. She has always cooked her own food nothing premade or out of a box. Her husband has hep C and putting off treatment because they are trying to get pg. She says it doesn't cost that much more, that you can get more meals out of it. I would think so to I know I'm bad but we eat mostly tv dinners healthy choice or ww and they are costing almost 5 bucks a piece well that in 10 dollars a meal I know that money could go alot further in veggies. I live in a very small town the veggies here are almost rotten makes me sick to look at them. So I would have to drive 150 mile round trip to the store to get fresh veggies. And out town has no pool closest one it 60 mile round trip with the cost of gas and my big gas hog van would be a little more than I could afford. Guest guest
Sharon, For some reason I thought you lived somewhere near where we met. This is definitely a difficult issue and on that needs to be addressed for you to get healthier. I wish I had some answers for you, I don't think I do. But I can say that whatever you need to do, no matter how extreme, is worth it. Especially when you consider the alternative. Steve > > > > > > All I want to know is why do I binge!! Guest guest
I admire your strength in hanging in there too. It's really amazing. I am going to speak with a couple of friends who know a hell of a lot more about this than I do. I'm sure there is something that can be done. Guest guest
I have had this book on my wish list for a while with Paperbackswap.com I went ahead and ordered through Amazon since I thought it was a good price. I also tossed in this book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0446199265 The more the merrier right I am one of those people who have dieted herself fatter. I went on a very strict diet called “Greysheet” for over 90 days that a friend recommended.. the weight came off and I did NOT eat any sugar or grains for that time period but when I cheated.. well I went big!! Gained almost all of it back. I tend to find that this is how it works for me on any diet.. what I have run into is that I find when I am deprived.. I tend to rebel and go off the deep end. I really need to find something that satisfies all my needs and doesn’t make me feel deprived. I will just have to keep looking. Thanks for the advice!
