has anyone also tried the holistic approches to OCD or phobias for misophonia?   I am researching things (St. 's wort, inositol etc.)  that have worked for others, but it seems such a slow process.  Our diet is mostly non-processed foods to begin with.  We eat fresh garden vegetables and fruits in abundance already and always have kept a pretty healthy diet.  I have no idea if her problem has to do with brain chemistry or not, but if she is deficient in anything, I'm not even sure how to find out what she is deficient in.  Would a doctor test seratonin or GABA levels over this?  Where does one begin?

I think drugs that help with OCD or phobias offer great promise for those with misophonia/4S.

Just a warning – if you’re already taking any antidepressents/anti-anxiety medications, do not add St. ’s Wort to it. It may not require an Rx, but it does have similar results to MAO inhibitors and SSRIs, so it may create too much of similar meds in your body. That said, if you’re not on prescription meds, I have heard that it helps. My 4S son also has OCD, and although he never tried St. s Wort, my sister who also has OCD and anxiety has tried it in the past and said it helped her with anxiety. Also, be sure to buy well-known brands since it is not regulated and the main ingredient is not always consistant between brands (or bottles). One more thought – my son will not take any medications (he did try quite a few times) because he doesn’t like the way it makes his thinking feel a little foggy and since he’s always reading & learning and analyzing, it interfears with keeping track of his strings of logic in his mind while he’s thinking. It’s too bad – I think some meds would really help with both his OCD and the anxiety with 4S. I've only been taking Mood Plus for about a week, so I'll have to let you know how it goes. I do feel like I've been responding to triggers really well this week, but that's always the psychological thing that happens right after starting something new (for me at least).I've been taking magnesium at night (a formula called Natural Calm, also from Vitacost) for a long time. I can't say that the results have been dramatic, but I do think it helps me to be more calm. It also helps me to sleep well and can help relieve constipation. The problem is that it makes getting up in the AM more difficult, which mean I drink more caffeine - and I'm right back to where I started! You have to experiement with the amount. I usually do a teaspoon or less, depending on how many hours I'm going to sleep, mixed with water.I've read that magnesium deficiency can contribute to sense sensitivities, but I wouldn't know either where to start.Cate> > >> > > i recently exchanged an email with a mom who said her daughter(age 15> > with misophonia) was helped with abilify. she said it helped alot with the> > hypervigilance or anticipation of the sounds. it made the condition> > manageable. did abilify help anybody else with misophonia???> > >> >> >> >> >> > ------------------------------------> >> > PLEASE BE AWARE THIS IS A STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL GROUP AND NO MESSAGES ARE> > TO BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE OUTSIDE OF THE YAHOO GROUP MEMBERSHIP SITE OR> > REPRODUCED OR COPIED AND MAILED FOR ANY PURPOSE.> >> > ALSO DO NOT SHARE MEMBER EMAIL ADDRESSES OR NAMES WITH ANYONE.> > Thank you. I just started my daughter on immunical (very expensive bioactive protein whey) because i've read that it has helped reduce anxiety (and boost the overall immune system) by raising glutathione levels.  I'm am beginning with this.  (and one St. 's wort supplement per day).  She has been on this for just short of a month but I do notice less " anger/rage " episodes.  Frustration is still there and still having to remove herself from the situation, but not with a total meltdown.  I'm sure it is just coinicence at this point, but I'm waiting about 3 months to see if I can see any real improvement.

PS  My husband was on ambilify but he went off it after 3 weeks due to severe headaches.  I do not want my daughter to start any drug type medicines if she doesn't have to.  I want to try anything natural as possible.  If anything has helped anyone I'd love to hear about it!
