Hi Kim,

Did your doctor diagnose EN after a biopsy or by looking? I think most of us can

say that EN is VERY painful. EN often goes away on it's own but if there is an

underlying trigger, you would be better off finding it and treating it or

eliminating it in the case of a drug reaction.

I hope yours goes away soon, and that it never gets painful.

Love,

I don't know how unusual that is but I only had pain in the area of the nodules at the very beginning. It was more of a burning sensation but the nodules weren't painful after a couple of days or so. However, I have severe muscle and joint fatigue and pain, especially in my legs before, during, and after a flare up. I don't have any other underlying conditions at all (that I know of) other than EN that might be causing the joint/muscle pain. I just think that everyone reacts differently.

Hey Kim,My EN isn't always painful.  sometimes you can see the nodules turning red, sometimes you can only feel them in my legs, and sometimes you can't.  It just depends on the flair up I guess.  right now i don't have any pain, but three weeks or so ago, i had a pretty significant amount of pain in those knots.  i have not had any joint pain, but lately I have had a very hard time keeping up with my kids- exhaustion has been a battle!

I think it also depends on your pain threshold. I have a very high pain tolerance- I have broken bones and didn't realize it.  So for me, the pain is minimal, where someone else may really feel the pain more intensely.

Take care, and like me, be thankful that your EN is not painful like it is for others! :D~bethany

I don't know that much about EN.....only became known to me in the past couple of months. Mine started out as one lump that lasted 6 months then turned into many for the past 6 months. My doctor sent me to a

Immunologist. He ran like 20 tests and all came back normal. He did tell me that we might not find anything that sometimes EN just happens. After an initial 2 weeks on steriods which settled the EN down a lot, now I am on just an anti-inflamatory.....I hate taking meds if I don't have to .....so I am trying to write down everything I eat and do to see if I can see a comparison to flare ups. I can say that the pain is not always there but the lumps are.......not sure if this helps any but good luck and God Bless!!!

Hey Gals! I think my EN is totally hormonal.  I have felt for months that my hormones were out of whack- told my hubby in May I wanted to have them checked.  Shortly after that conversation with him I broke out in my EN first flare up.  I had no idea what it was, but I knew the nodules hurt. I went to three different Doctors, and finaly the third one knew immediately what it was.

I was told by my third doctor, a Dermatologist / Histologist, that most EN stems from hormonal imbalances.  He seemed to be on top of his game too, My brother was in the navy and is a nurse now- I asked him to attend the appointment with me, and there were all kinds of awards on the walls from the navy for commended this and that, and my brother was very impressed with the accomplishments of this Doctor.  When he said he was also a histologist on top of being a dermatologist he was even more impressed- So was I!!!  The very second he saw my legs he knew exactly what it was.  I had no idea what he said because Erythema Nodosum is a wierd and long term that I had never heard!  After saying that what it was called, he said 'Are you on Birth Control Pills?'  I am actually on Merena- which has a very low dose of progesterone that it releases directly into the uterus because I can't take any other type of birth control- I get violently ill with Birth Control Pills, or the patch, or the ring thing, or the shot.  So I chose the lowest dose of hormonal birth control available- and still I have issues with hormones!  It is just the way my body works, and I'm okay with that.  I am trying to find a doctor right now that will swap my Merena for a copper IUD in less than three visits... believe it or not, that is not an easy task!  I really feel that once I get the IUD Swapped out I will not ever have a flare up again- unless I get pregnant again which I would love to!

I find it interesting that a lot of us have gotten the nodules on our legs after being pregnant- which is what Progesterone does- it tricks the body into thinking it is pregnant (if i'm not mistaken).  I also find it interesting that many of us are allergic, or have a sensitivity, to eggs-  I mean how much closer to a hormone based reaction can you get?  I mean, you don't see roosters laying eggs! LOL!  AND, I don't see any men on here, so I think that may be another sign that this is a hormonal issue for most.

I don't have the joint pain that a lot of you have. Another thing I see that may tie EN to hormones.....does anyone else find it interesting that many women that have PMS suffer from pain in their hips and low back!   I have noticed that most of the women that say that they have joint pain from EN complain about it being in hips and low back.... It may be coincidental, but I think there is a connection between the two!

This is just my take on things...I'm no doctor, but I do see a lot of connections or similarities in symptoms of female hormone imbalance and EN.  I know what has worked for me so far:  I have eliminated Soy(contains estrogen naturally), and Eggs from my diet, and have drastically reduced my gluten intake.  The lumps/nodules on my legs are almost completely gone now in just two weeks from making these small dietary changes.  I have one lump left that seems to be a little more stubborn in leaving, but it is so small at this point I hardly notice it.

I also have eliminated a lot of stress from my life- and have started spending about an hour (fifteen minutes here, ten minutes there) of my time each day in prayer and meditation.  It really helps me to hand stuff over to God rather than to hold on to it.  I also have been keeping a journal of things that I still hold on to- anger and resentments, and things that I have unforgiveness about.  It helps me to release it when I write it down and work through it, and have forgiven many many wrongs done to me by writing them down.  Some things I didn't even realize I was upset about!

Combining stress relief with dietary changes has helped me tremendously!  I hope that maybe this input will help someone else find relief from EN!!!I love this group, it is awesome to have a place to trouble shoot together. I just know in my gut that my EN is hormonal and stress related.  Take care, and trust your instinct about your EN!!!

I'm so sorry I have been dealt the same hand but through observation of my own I have seen that if im on stomach meds that stop the pumps it lowers my immune system and I break out. but what is it in my system that does this because my husband takes them and has no problems. I have been to the mayo clinic and they gaffed me off. I had bad break outs for almost 12 yrs.. don’t let your docs blow ya off, keep on searching, watch your diet start eliminating things one at a time, only start 1 new med at time and compare to what you are taking. give yourself breaks and I use a lot of ibuprophin (probably not good either) but it helps. hot baths help me with aches. how long have you had this. good luck

I have chronic hip pain, lower back pain also. I get these lumps in my lower legs

and I've been diagnosed with RA and (EN) through a biopsy the Type of EN is

Lipodermasclorsis my RA doctor keeps putting me on prednisone with RA

medication. It does help but not enough for the pain. I've been lump free now

for about a year but the discoloration in the lower legs get to me but at least

no lumps. If u still have chronic pain in hips might what to check for R A also.

I do reduce the amount of gluten on my diet and it does help with reducing joint

pain and IBS , I don't know if this helps but your not alone and this group does

help.
