Dear

Join Earth Hour 2008 - this Saturday 8-9pm

What is it?

Earth Hour 2008 is fast growing into one of the biggest demonstrations of

concern about climate change yet. This Saturday 29 March, at 8pm local time,

millions across the world will switch off their lights for one hour to send a

clear message of support for global action on climate change.

By supporting Earth Hour, you'll be challenging governments and business

to rise to the challenge of climate change.

More than 20 cities around the world are taking part - from Tel Aviv to

Toronto and Brisbane to Bangkok, as well as businesses, celebrities and

government institutions.

What can I do?

Switch off your lights for one hour at 8pm on Saturday 29 March. It's as

simple as that! But if you want to do more, you can:

UK government withdraws backing for Sakhalin

Threat to Russian wildlife reduced

Thanks to a WWF-UK court action and WWF campaigners lobbying the UK

government, a significant threat to the wildlife of Sakhalin Island in eastern

Russia has been thwarted.

The Sakhalin II oil and gas pipeline project has already caused serious

environmental damage and threatens the extinction of the western Pacific gray

whale.

WWF's court action played a significant role in convincing Sakhalin Energy

to abandon its attempts to obtain financial support from the UK government's

Export Credits Guarantee Department. We will continue to send signals to

government that it is not acceptable to set ambitious climate change targets at

home while investing in environmentally detrimental projects overseas.

WWF Scotland leads the way on 80% cut

Climate campaign surprises ish parliament

Thanks to over 15,000 WWF campaigners, the ish government was

recently overwhelmed by the strength of support for WWF Scotland's Climate

Change Campaign.

The campaign aims to commit Scotland to reducing its carbon emissions by

up to 80% by 2050. If more countries follow this example then we will have a

chance to tackle climate change, helping secure a future for people and for

species such as the polar bear, threatened with extinction as the Arctic ice

melts.

Government challenged on Heathrow expansion

Coalition brings pressure on third runway

WWF-UK has been supporting campaigns that challenge the proposed new third

runway at Heathrow. Last month many of our WWF online campaigners responded to

our call to action by signing the Stop Heathrow Expansion petition.

On 31 May a huge carnival will bring together opponents of the expansion

of Heathrow. It is being organised by NoTRAG, HACAN, Campaign against Climate

Change and Greenpeace.

As momentum builds, the government will find it increasingly difficult to

reconcile building new runways with the UK's carbon targets - especially if

these are strengthened to an 80% cut, as WWF is demanding.
