Earth Hour 2008 is fast growing into one of the biggest demonstrations of concern about climate change yet. This Saturday 29 March, at 8pm local time, millions across the world will switch off their lights for one hour to send a clear message of support for global action on climate change. By supporting Earth Hour, you'll be challenging governments and business to rise to the challenge of climate change. More than 20 cities around the world are taking part - from Tel Aviv to Toronto and Brisbane to Bangkok, as well as businesses, celebrities and government institutions. What can I do? The Sakhalin II oil and gas pipeline project has already caused serious environmental damage and threatens the extinction of the western Pacific gray whale. WWF's court action played a significant role in convincing Sakhalin Energy to abandon its attempts to obtain financial support from the UK government's Export Credits Guarantee Department. We will continue to send signals to government that it is not acceptable to set ambitious climate change targets at home while investing in environmentally detrimental projects overseas. The campaign aims to commit Scotland to reducing its carbon emissions by up to 80% by 2050. Last month many of our WWF online campaigners responded to our call to action by signing the Stop Heathrow Expansion petition. On 31 May a huge carnival will bring together opponents of the expansion of Heathrow. It is being organised by NoTRAG, HACAN, Campaign against Climate Change and Greenpeace. As momentum builds, the government will find it increasingly difficult to reconcile building new runways with the UK's carbon targets - especially if these are strengthened to an 80% cut, as WWF is demanding.
