OK ...I started taking MS Contin (the only new drug in my " mix " )

about a month ago. Seems to help with my pain, but yes, I do

get constipated. I had been taking 1 laxative about every other

evening, but last monday, I hadn't gone in awhile so I took 2.

It kicked in around noon the next day~HARD I had awful

cramps, and started vomiting. about 3 hours later, with NO

stopping, I had my son find a neighbor to take me to the doc's.

It took a couple of shots to help slow the vomiting, and wasn't till

1am on Wed. that I was finally able to keep water and a bit of

juice down. The doc never said what this was. I did not have a

fever, in fact I was drenched with sweat and very cold.

Well....This afternoon, I started feeling not so good in my

stomach, so I layed down. When I awoke, I had the same type of

cramps, went to bathroom and was cramping worse, ended up

vomiting again...I immediately took the Donnatal and phenergan

my stomach is still feeling nasty, but I am not Still vomiting at this

point.

Any Ideas? Could it be the Morphine? Could I be getting toxic

from having poop stuck in me? just lucky? Any ideas sure

would be appreciated!

Lori,

The sweating and nausea sounds just like symptoms I have had on

Morphine, Oxycontin, etc. Usually do to lowering the dose, in my

case.

After 1 month and with no dose changes I would suspect something

else. Perhaps it is something " normal " like flu or food poisoning?

I think you should try to call your MD or maybe a triage nurse at

the Emergency Room for advice. If you are not sure, I would suggest

going back to the hospital just to be safe.

I guess one of the added joys of chronic pain is that it makes

medical issues so confusing!

I'm worried about you! Please get some advice from a medical

professional. Then when things have settled down, let us know if you

are OK.

This is a little late, but I just went to the Pain Clinic at Tufts in Boston and

they told me to take Magnesium Citrate to relax my muscles. At a higher dose it

acts as a laxative and is all natural. You can find it in with the other

laxatives. Maybe this would help.

Dear Lori,

Sorry to bother you again, but, the more i think about it the more i get worried

about you. I think you should call and ask for the stuff. It really is just a

clear liquid, and it makes it as though you were never taking any meds...i dont

think there are any bad side effects to it...thats what happened to me on the

weekend, finally i could not take it any more...so i called and they had no

problem giving this to me...i always keep suppositories on hand, just incase in

get a little impacted from forgetting to take it and use one or two, and then i

go again just like nothing...this can be dangerous, if you are vomiting like is

was, that is why i paged my doc...the only other option i had was go the the er

to impacted and that i did not want to do unless necessary...i am worried about

you alot, please write me and let me know how you are feeling...

When the pharmacist told me they use this all the time for people taking

morphine and other meds like this, i wondered why in the world would they just

not give this to you...i think, i may be wrong here, but, everyone get

constipated on these meds, some meds more than others but why not just give you

something so you dont have to suffer like this??? It comes with the territory

unfortunately. I am so grateful i have this routine know, where i never suffer

like that again...it took me a year to find this out...spending many days and

nights in pain in the bathroom...vomiting and sweating and shaking and

everything else ....yes, it can become toxic...so please take care and let me

know how you are.??????janine p.s. I am not trying to scare you, just trying

to help you....cause i am worried...

I get that kind of reaction to many over the counter laxatives. It's on

all their warning labels, but for some reason, it took me more than a

few bouts of side effects, before I carefully read the label's fine

print on each of them. I went to the doctor once when the vomiting and

cramping were terrible. Even he didn't clue in on the fact that it was

the laxative that set me off.

I have a kink in my bowel, so even before I had to start taking

narcotics, constipation was something with which I was already

uncomfortably familiar. Of course, the first line of defence is water

and high fibre foods. (for the USians reading this -- that's how many

other countries properly spell fibre - it isn't a typo) lol

It was on this board that I mentioned that my constipation got worse

when I started taking Avinza (morphine sulphate). Janine mentioned to

me that she takes Generlac Solution. I checked with my pharmacist and

she said the Generlac was another name for Lactulose Solution. She also

said they sold gallons and gallons of Lactulose every week. I phoned my

pain management clinic and asked them to phone in an order for me, which

they promptly did. I don't remember what it cost, but I know it wasn't

very much. (If it had been expensive, I would remembered the cost -

right down to the penny:-)

The Lactulose/Generlac Solution helps. (It is a sugar solution, so I

expect it is a no-no for most diabetics). I also put Benefiber in my

coffee, tea, etc. and can't even tell it's there. That stuff is sooo

much easier to swallow than things like Metamucil. I know it's

available in North America, but don't know if its available on the other

side of the pond. Probably is - just under a different name. In North

America it is made by the same company that makes Ex-Lax. I figured it

would be too expensive for my budget, but since I don't need to take so

much of it, a jar lasts quite awhile.

Way back when, someone else on this board said that they take a stool

softener whenever they take their narcotics. That helps too (when I

remember to take it :-) I finally started putting it in the little

tablet holder I use for my nightly meds. It's not quite as effective

that way, but it sure is better than forgetting to take it at all.

Good old Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) has been around for a very

long time and is approved for laxative use. It tastes absolutely

terrible, but usually works without much in the way of side effects. I

take it when push comes to shove :-)

Miralax (polyethylene glycol) doesn't taste bad, but again for some

people (like me) it can cause nausea, vomiting and cramping.

Hopefully helpfully,

Hi there

I take MS-Contin ALL the time, 130mg twice a day. I too am heavily

constipated. I have learned to take laxative on a really regular basis. I

take two prescription laxatives (in Australia called Bisalax) twice a day

and I also take two Coloxyl and Senna tablets twice a day. These keep me

reasonably regular. If I still can't go (which does happen), I have that

peanuts really get things moving - so do oranges (or any fruit).

Also, I have found, that if I am constipated, I will vomit when I get too

full, if the food is not moving, then it may get stuck in the stomach. As a

nurse I found in other patients with constipation problems that the stomach

will reject food that stays in the stomach for too long without moving on.

I don't think it is the morphine.

I hope this helps

TTFN

Alan
