Any suggestions for surgery and or rehab? Isabell is an 80 pound (overweight) FS choco lab that is currently 2 years old. The x-rays were taken 1 year ago and the dog was placed on Dasuquin. She came in to talk to me about what she can do to prevent OA and keep her dog healthy and happy. No current lameness and no apparent pain (ilio, paraspinal, sartorius, LS). I was surprised, but happy. I recommended continue Dasuquin, add Omega 3, and Adequan to maintain best joint health, weight loss (about 10 pounds), and regular exercise to keep her strong (including UWTM and/or LTM). Any other suggestions? Has anyone had a patient with this deformity, any recommended surgery, other preventative measures, thoughts on problems she will have in the future?

Thanks.-- Christie Carlo, DVM, CCRT

Christie,

Very nice films. Looks like the poor Labrador has Pomeranian legs. Are the

patellas stable and secure in this dog? They both look luxated medially on the

VD pelvic view.

Your proactive plan to prevent OA sounds very complete to me, and like you

suggested the weight loss would be paramount. I suppose because the dog's tibial

tuberosity on each rear leg is positioned medially, this would predispose her to

MPL and CCL rupture. Targeting the quadriceps and hamstrings would be indicated

to stabilize the stifles. I'd probably also have the owner keep the exercise on

flat surfaces/ground, and avoid forced jumping (eg. no frisbie, or chasing

tennis balls on hills).

Ligaplex is another supplement you might consider for this dog. Labradors are on

the list of breeds that can have congenitally weak cruciate ligaments, so it

wouldn't be surprising if she tore a cruciate at some point. Good luck!
