if you are referring to lawn care without the use of chemical fertilizers and

weed killers there are plenty of books available

while I still use fertilizer there are plenty of things you can do to improve

the lawn without chemicals...

the book I refer to (not an organic book) advises to do the following in

order to have a nice yard

use a mulching mower

have the lawn core aerated at least every two years

dethatching - (only if its reallly bad) not necessary if you core aerate or

add some top dressing (top soil) yearly

the books also recommends adding lime based on your soil type-you could find

out if your soil needs it by taking a sample to the county extension service

also you should overseed as grass plants do have a limited lifespan...

the best part is a good healthy lawn will keep weed growth down to a minimum

so you wouldnt need a chemical de-weeder...my wife is able to go out and pull

the occasional dandelion and our lawn looks great!

sorry I dont have the book title....

Does this extend to organic methods to control bugs in your house? I would like

some information on that if you have it.

Yes -- much better and less expensive in the long run. There's a wonderful

radio talk show on this every week in my area. The host has written several

books and has a website with lots of good info -- www.dirtdoctor.com

My husband just started trying it this year. He's put beer, dish soap and

something else (ammonia?) that eludes me right now on our lawn. I must say

our lawn is very green and not buggy.

Dear Steve,

I've had excellent results with products from http://www.tainio.com/. I use

a distributor name Pat Hansen in Washington state, I think. You can find her

on their " distributor " list on this website. I've used her for a few years

and she'll answer questions or find out answers for you. Their primary

product is a microbial called Biogenesis. The problem to switching to

organic from chemical products, is that part or most of the microbial life in

the soil has been killed off.

I have an ancient lawn that has never seen fertilizer or herbicides so I

don't have experience here, but I have listened to past seminar tapes and

these products are used on golf courses, the ultimate challenge.

Yes he does cover some of that. Which bugs do you want to control?

Beneficial nematodes are terrific at eliminating ants, fleas, mosquitos and

termites. You apply them to your lawn and beds around the house.

If you're using chemical fertilizer, check the labels carefully. Many

contain high levels of nickel as well as other things that are harmful to the

body. Check out the dirt doctor site I posted about to find some good ideas

for organic fertilizers. His recommendations are really great at building

healthy lawns.

A book I really like is REBUGGING YOUR HOME AND GARDEN:

a step by step guide to modern pest control

(5 authors!)

One of the main things I like about this book is that is

lists a WIDE RANGE of things to do (for a given bug)---

some more toxic than others--- so you know what the options

are. It in arranged in a format that is VERY easy to use---

each bug has a couple of pages, including a chart where you

figure out what might work.... (I'm not explaining that

right, but it is very nice and easy to use.)
