Guest guest
My questions probably seem rather silly, but once I asked the first question it seemed there were a more to ask, Geoff, you mentioned taking blood from the forearm, is the reading different when taken from a different part of the body? At the blood clinic they take it from the forearm and take a lot more than just a pin pricks worth. I seem have the same kind of dr. as many others, they diagnose you and then set you adrift to figure out what to do all by yourself. Right now I seem to be on a high, like starting a new life, and my enthusiam is up there to eat right and exercise. Does this happen to others ? How much exercise do most of you do and what type, is a treadmill and step exercises enough or do I need to diversify more? Jan
Guest guest
Hi Jan, Please don't think any question is too silly to ask here We've all been in your boat (some of us still are!) and we love to answer questions ! If you need to know it we will try to answer it gladly. I know what you mean about the doctor. It's sad that they don't take more time to explain things to us. I had to learn almost everything about diabetes on my own. It took a lot of trial and error and a lot of research but I'm glad I did it this way. The reason is that I researched a lot of conflicting information, sorted through a lot of misinformation and think I came out better for it in the long run although it would have happened a lot sooner if my doctor had been more knowledgable in the first place. Oh well The answer to your question about diet and exercise is yes and no, hehehe. Some people go through a lot of denial first. I actually had one girl on here tell me that she really didn't want to know all this stuff right now, she didn't want to worry about it, and she left the group! Talk about denial! It's good that you're enthused and ready to go for it For the exercise to work you should really think about what kinds of things you like to do. My husband and I like to canoe and camp so we do some outdoorsy kind of things like walking and hiking. But for winter and even summer when it gets real hot I like to do exercise tapes. I started off with and those " Sweatin' to the Oldie's " ... they're fun and easy to do. Now I've " graduated to harder stuff like Jane Fonda - she has some real good tapes. If you decide to try tapes, don't even try to keep up with them at first! Go at your own pace... this applies to walking or any other exercise at first. If all you can do is walk to the corner and back, then just do that every day for a week... by the end of the week you can probably double that distance. It can only get better! If you try to push it too hard and make yourself all tense about it (not to mention sore!) you'll get discouraged and bummed out - don't wanna do that. Try to keep it fun and you'll be more likely to stick with it. Also, if you can get someone else to do it with you you'll be more likely to stick with it too Hang onto that high, its a good thing and will really help you a lot.
