ABC Coverage on Autism

You know, I notice how 'undevastating' some of these characteristics

of Autism sound: difficulty communicating and interacting with

others, speak little, ignore others, repetative behavior, etc. It

really doesn't capture the disorder as it truly affects the child

and the family. To those who don't know anybody with Autism, this

description could mean a shy, quiet kid with a few odd behaviors.

Nothing they need to worry about.

I also wish they'd discuss the physical ailments so common with our

kids.

I so totally agree! I want to see them talk about how almost all ASD kids have

low NK cells, Low Glutathione, usually some type of high viral titter, whether

it is measles, EBV, Herpes 6, etc. Huge problems with gut pathogens, yeast

problems in the gut, and how all of these immune system problems affect how the

mind works, good or bad.

That is what they just don't seem to talk about at all. Very frustrating to

listen to and read about. This is the big empty space they all leave out in

their reporting.

I was pleased to hear NBC mention both glutathione therapy and that they are

looking at immune system issues and toxins as possible causes.

This may be the first time I have ever heard any of those things mentioned in a

news report. While it may not be perfect, I am so pleased to see autism getting

the attention it is getting on NBC this week.

It has to start somewhere and making the public more aware of the numbers of

children who have autism and what it does to families is a start.

Funny, those of us living this have known for years that there is an epidemic

and for us there is nothing hidden about it. Unfortunately it took someone in a

powerful position being touched by the disorder for a network to start giving it

attention.

Let's hope there is more to come in the future.

They are also doing reports about autism on the NBC Nightly News on MSNBC and

CNBC. There is even going to be a storyline about autism on the comedy Scrubs.

One of the doctors recognizes autism in his best friend's child.

This morning the Today Show featured a segment about a child being tested for

autism and also an interview with Dan Marino and his wife and autistic son.

Over and over they are saying that autism affects 1 in every 166 children and

that there are 1.7 million Americans with the disorder. At the very least,

people are hearing that there are lots of folks being touched by this disorder.

This morning a doctor in one of the segments said something that I think is very

important. He said it needs to be realized that autism is a medical disorder

just like cancer and that there needs to be funding and support for the children

and families. YES, YES, YES.

I've been saying this for years and so have lots of other people.

I think NBC is doing this series in conjunction with Newsweek, so there may be

coverage in that magazine as well.

Well, I have not had a chance to watch the Today Show, I am glad that those

things are finally being mentioned. It would be great to see those things

mentioned in some of the night time shows. So many people are at work in the

mornings and so this is not being seen by as many as needs to be.

Not to be negative, I am thrilled that autism is finally getting so much

coverage. It is about time.

I WAS so happy, too, to hear the doc try to slam the fact home that

Autism is a medical disorder. I believe it will take that

realization for people to start becoming concerned and asking the

tough questions.

I didn't mean to be so negative about the coverage. I was speaking

specifically to the article posted from ABC. The symptoms listed

don't reflect the damage done to our children. I do enjoy seeing

the coverage in every magazine and TV show. I think " Scrubs " is a

hilarious show; I can't wait to see how they tackle Autism.

I did read one article on-line about a mom who believed her child

was damaged by Thimerosal. Unfortunately, they then stated his

Autism was caused by the MMR vaccine. I'm sure some vaccine pusher

will quickly point out that the MMR never contained Thimerosal:

thus making the public breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Misplaced relief, but relief nonetheless.

Such a complicated issue. I believe 100% that the tide is turning

in our favor. It is exciting, anxiety-producing and sad all at the

same time. I'm saving my big " I TOLD YOU SO " for several people in

my child's life (doctors, family members, therapists, etc). Not

very mature, I know.
