Hi Pam, I moved from Lancaster/Palmdale 2 years ago to Las Vegas. I still have some rental houses there so I go now and them to maintain them. Maybe we can meet next time I go or you come here. MikeTo:

Since a 4S convention will be in the somewhat-near future and not immediately, I will say YES. I am in Lancaster, California, about 60-65 miles north of Los Angeles, up in the high desert.

I need to get my car repairs done... just got done paying off the note, the car is all mine, and now I can do the car repairs which were deferred. I had an approximately 30% pay cut some years ago, and am still recuperating from that.

That said, I would be very interested. I love AYCE buffets, especially if there is some Asian food there. I don't like other people's mouth sounds, but I'm pretty adventurous with food. Steak to sushi, that's me. It's not hard to feed me, but I need non-petite portions of food.

I like to be alone sometimes, but there have been times when I really liked parties too.

Sometimes it also grosses me out when pets slurp themselves in private places too. When this one cat gets up on the computer table and starts to lick herself, I sometimes make her get off he table. Little too gross. LOL.

Actually, where I live, a lot of people let their children run amok in restaurants (especially buffet restaurants) and stores. The noise bothers me (constant shrieking), but I'm also worried that one of the little monsters will run into me and knock me down. I walk with a cane, and if I fall it won't be a pretty sight, and it won't be easy to get up!

I used to live in Ridgecrest and drove through Lancaster all the time (also played sports against AV and Palmdale in High School).  I love the High Desert of CA!!  Now I’m in VA, but still drive through there when I go to visit my parents. Small World! I just spoke to a woman who told me about her first husband who could not stand to hear her eat or breath. I think this is much more common then we think! It is so hard to tell people about it so it is kept a secret. I have been married 4 times and it has been a problem in every marriage. First wife was the most tolerant of it. Oh it is very common.  You wouldn’t believe the amount of people I have met with it.  It’s because I am very vocal about it.  Most people just suffer in silence because (understandably) they don’t want others to find out about it.  But I don’t have it so I talk about it. I think that it affects 1 out of 50 people.  Just from seeing the amount of kids who have it per school I sub at.  It could be even more. I have some friends who think 4S is funny - a joking matter. I don't think they

realise that I had kept quiet about it for 40 years and am still a little wary

about mentioning it - as you said " Most people just suffer in silence because

(understandably) they don't want others to find out about it " . Their joking does

hurt me.

If you were laughed at or put down about your 4S when it first occurred at age

12 or whatever - especially if the person laughing at you was a strict or

volatile parent who you were wary of - then you learned very quickly to hide 4S

as a deep dark secret, only to be divulged in extreme, minimally threatening

situations (close friends that you trusted greatly). You learned from an early

age that it was something to be ashamed of.

yes, I too have always been deeply ashamed of my 4S and kept it a secret. Only

my family knew. It is great to have found this forum where we can discuss it

openly. Most of your stories are exactly like mine.

Cool! I didn't expect to meet anyone on this list who was familiar with this

area. We've been here about 7-1/2 years now. I like some things about this

place a lot, other things not so much.

But where we're planning to go (Kingman, AZ) is a lot like this too.

I'd love to know how many people in their 40's or 50's, who had this as a child, had a 'volitile' parent, not accepting of their situation at all.  And also, did they force you to put up with it because they down-played how serious it was to you.  Did it make those ppl worse because of it?  I ask because I have a child now, whom many in our family have joked about the situation (her siblings included).   Everyone now knows not to mess with her.

My family let me eat in a separate room because I could not stand to be near my

younger bother when he was eating. When the family went to a restaurant, I ate

at the counter (if available), separate from the family who ate at a table.

I resented the fact that my parents did not try to get me help for my problem.

They ignored it instead. My father said that I would grow out of it. I'm 55

years old now. I never grew out of it.

By the way, my mother was cruel and she beat me up all of the time for just

about anything.

I would love to go to a convention for this. I am in Cove, Oregon. And will be turning 16 in just a few weeks so i will be able to drive myself to wherever we have it. I would be soo excited. I really don't know. One of my children, now 18 years old, has 4S, although her

triggers are different to mine. At least I have talked to her about it, and I

don't make fun of it - so she is not growing up in the same situation as I did.

Half our household has 4S, and all the household knows that I have found

hundreds of other people on the Internet with the same condition.

It was a bit scary at first. When she was about 14, she would scratch her own

face angrily if anyone sniffed near her. She had marks on her face and her older

sister would occasionally get upset about the " self harm " aspect. Over time,

this behaviour subsided. She still sometimes slams objects down when she hears a

trigger sound, or storms out of rooms, but generally she is good natured, and we

just try to give her care and support.
