LOVED IT. :-D did stick out like a sore thumb, BUT...two times he knew he was overwhelmed, went to the birthday mom (his friend's mother, who he knows well), and said, " I need to go to a quiet room " , and then he and I went to another part of the house alone and chilled out for 15 minutes. I really don't know, except that we've ALWAYS made it a habit, since learning about sensory overload (2 years ago), to take him to a quiet place when a family gathering or party or playgroup or something gets to him. We have just seen him losing it, and removed him, telling him we were going to sit quietly for a few minutes... I guess he appreciated that!
