Juel,

Sadly we are all inducted into this journey unceremoniously and

unprepared for what lies ahead. I have been a caregiver too and know

the role you play as a researcher, priest, friend and team member

along with your husband and his doctors. It is not an easy road ...

but this is a good place to find some common sense discussion in

managing this disease. Also I particularly like the quote you have

from Winston Churchill ... very appropriate! I can totally relate...

Chemotherapy, in general does not cure prostate cancer but utilizes

anti-cancer drugs with the goal of trying to ‘slow’ the tumor's growth

and relieve symptoms. You are also correct in surmising that it is

used only for advanced metastatic prostate cancers that have failed to

respond to other treatments. Is this the case for your husband? The

best move is to speak with your oncologist and see what he/she says …

please get back to us and keep us informed …

You asked about chemotherapy for prostate cancer (PCa). Your docs should know

that at ASCO last year the 3-wkly regime of taxotere with prednisolone showed a

survival advantage over the previously- used standard treatment for advanced PCa

of mitoxantrone with prednisolone - not a lot, but worth knowing about since

this was the first time survival had been extended in PCa. Other regimes have

been tried eg taxotere with emcyt or calcitriol and different approaches are

also being explored eg with thalidomide. Of course, if there are other

possibilities you would probably opt for those first but it's not the case that

there is no chemotherapy... You might like to take a look at this site for more

ideas - http://www.hrpca.org (The hrpca stands for hormone refractory PCa.)

There's also a [small-ish] list attached.

Best wishes

My husband and I are new to this thing. I keep reading emails about men having chemo. We were told that there is no chemo for prostate cancer. Is this only our urologist (we see the oncologist in a week), or only the USA? Dale's cancer is advanced, does that make a difference? Just trying to sort out the overload of information. :)Peace on the journey,Juel captwildchild@...************************************If you are going through hell, keep going. --Winston Churchill__________________________________________________
