Guest guest
Hi Consider small doses of Cinchona officinalis. It will certainly help with the faintness / drained state from loss of fluids and has affinity to GB/Liv system Best wishes Craig _____ From: ukherbal-list [mailto:ukherbal-list ] On Behalf Of Dore Sent: 13 December 2007 18:15 To: ukherbal-list Subject: long term diarrhoea I am seeing an 80 year old man on Monday and would appreciate and thoughts. I have only spoken to his son but the man has had diarrhoea for 1.5 years. Goes 2-3 times daily, but in last week it was 4-5 times and he was so drained and unwell he fainted and had to have a few days in hospital. They have not done any tests but he has had several courses of Abx and told to get Imodium. He does not eat dairy (Indian) mainly vegetarian diet. The son said it all started after he had a gallstone removed -could this be a cause? He is taking probiotics and recently took turmeric which eased the sx a little. thanks for any suggestions Dore No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Hi was it just a stone, or did he lose the gall bladder also? I would get him on Ulmus asap myself I think. The probiotics sound sensible, but doesn't an Indian diet often include quantities of yoghurt? Friends returning from India have extolled the benefits of yoghurt there for digestion (!) (with banana, I think, but not sure) Sally O > I am seeing an 80 year old man on Monday and would appreciate and > thoughts. Guest guest
I don't know if he also lost gallbladder will find out on Monday. I also thought yoghurt was used in Indian cooking (I certainly use it) but that was what his son said when I asked about dairy. Thanks for ulmus suggestion, I'm thinking must be a lot of inflammation so that would be calming. Dore Re: long term diarrhoea Hi was it just a stone, or did he lose the gall bladder also? Guest guest
If his gallbladder was removed the diarrhoea could be due to irritation of the Intestinal mucosa by the constant influx of bile directly into the Intestinal tract, in which case mucous membrane restoratives and mucoprotective herbs such as Hydrastis and Ulmus would be indicated. I find it can be helpful to mix some turmeric in with the slippery elm powder to help with any associated inflammation. In Chinese medicine chronic diarrhoea indicates 'spleen qi deficiency' (often with a pale quivering tongue or one with swollen or toothmarked edges or a white tongue coating. Helpful herbs include Inula, Cinnamonum, Panax quinquefolius, and Atractyloides. Gentle tannin containing herbs can be combined with these to help ease the symptoms.
