Guest guest
For those of you that take Oxycontin, do you take OxyIR (oxycodone 5mg) for breakthrough pain? I'm on 20mg of Oxycontin 2x a day and have been for over 2 years due to now 14 knee surgeries. I was on Oxy IR (5 mg) taking it three times a day. I've been in a lot of pain before my last knee surgery and I asked to be put on Oxycontin 10 mg in the middle of the day instead of the OxyIR. The OxyIR wasn't working for my pain- it was wearing off too fast. My pain management doctor's resident instead put me on OxyIR(5 mg) five doses a day. This seems like a lot to me and that I should just be on the Oxycontin 10mg instead. He said I could take two of the OxyIR pills together every four hours (10 mg). Does anyone else take this much OxyIR (oxycodone)? Thank you!! Margaret
Guest guest
This is my understand of the difference between the two medications. Oxycontin is a long acting narcotic. Oxycodone (OxyIR) is a short acting or immediate release narcotic. OxyIR is usually used for breakthrough pain. I take 10mg of OxyIR every 4-6 hours. My doctor thinks a long acting medication like Oxycontin would probably work better for me but it is very expensive and I don't have insurance. That is why I am taking the OxyIR more frequently. I have arthritis and fibromyalgia and the OxyIR is making it so I can function on a daily basis. Good luck finding medication that helps you. What really gets me is that the two are exactly the same drug. Originally the drug company said that the Oxycontin had to be so expensive because they spent so much money putting oxycodone into the slow release formula labelled Oxycontin. The drug company recouped its expenses for developing the slow release version a long time ago and the patent protection time has expired. Now the price of the generic version of " oxycontin " is ridiculously inflated in the US too. A month's supply of oxycodone costs me $40. A month's supply of the same strength in the slow release formula would cost me close to $400. Generic " oxycontin " is about $250. Guest guest
Margaret>> For those of you that take Oxycontin, do you take OxyIR (oxycodone 5mg) for breakthrough pain? Hi Margaret, I take Roxicodone 15mg (hydrocodone...same thing basically as oxycodone) for my break through med so I can't see how 2 OxyIR (10mg) would be too much. But, having said that...I also agree with you in that why doesn't he just give you more Oxycontin if you get the extra pain everyday. The quick acting (oxyIR is only if the pain is occasionally....break through pain. I think most people on Oxycontin are taking it 3 times a day now as it does work much better that way. Hope I helped some! Ann/PA I'm on 20mg of Oxycontin 2x a day and have been for over 2 years due to now 14 knee surgeries. I was on Oxy IR (5 mg) taking it three > times a day. Guest guest
Stopped Oxycontin many months ago due to the difficult side effects I encountered, like sleeping too much and so easily fell asleep at the drop of a hat. I take methadone, 80 mg. a day if needed. I don't seem to have such uncomfortable side effects. I can also remember things much better than with the oxycontin. Also, I have a question thought maybe you might have an answer or suggestion. Is the Oxycodone a derivative of Codeine??? Take care, Alice Torrance, CA. USA It is raining cats and dogs outside tonight...
