An informal poll:

Some people, AS and NT, hear music which isn't there, ranging from mild and even

quite pleasant background sounds to intrusive and annoyingly repetitive phrases.

My AS son experiences this but never mentioned it until asked, he assumed that

it was a normal condition experienced by everybody. So two questions for Aspies,

do you hear music and, if so, is it disruptive or tolerable?

If you find this question intrusive please accept my apology and ignore it.

I don't normally hear background music, but sometimes my brain will try to force

background sounds into a melodic/rhythmic pattern. I'm aware that my brain is

trying to organize the sounds, and it's never been annoying.

When I was younger, everytime I had to take a test in school and I'd be trying to think of the answer the theme song for the television show Astroboy would keep running through my head, and it wouldn't stop, until the test was over. Used to drive me nuts trying to think of the answers to the test questions when all I could hear in my head was that damn song! I'd be trying to make the song go away and it would just stubbornly keep repeating itself, over and over (and over and etc). I like the alternative term: "tune wedgie"! It makes me grin and giggle every time I think of it. ~ "Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal."--Albert Camus Sent from my VZW BlackBerrySender: aspires-relationships Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2011 17:18:44 +0000To: <aspires-relationships >ReplyTo: aspires-relationships Subject: Re: music on the brain Hi Bob,Could it be an " earworm " .. or is it something else?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earworm- Helen>> An informal poll: > > Some people, AS and NT, hear music which isn't there, ranging from mild and even quite pleasant background sounds to intrusive and annoyingly repetitive phrases. Okay, and any others, I believe I can provide a surefire cure for this problem of a tune or a poem (or maybe just about anything else that is preying and repeating intrusively on the brain). years ago, I learnt a wonderful and easy method of fixing it. As long as you proceed to fight against the obsessional tune or whatever, it will just continue to impress itself on your mind. So, first of all, you must do the complete opposite. Deliberately concentrate on it. start voluntarily singing or humming it over and over to yourself for a few seconds. Then comes the big trick. Deliberately MESS IT UP. And I really mean that. Sing it ridiculously fast and then slow in bursts. SPOIL THE TUNE COMPLETELY. Go right off key, and make it sound totally wrong. The faster the better. If there are words, then get the words wrong. The more ridiculous you can make it and the more unlikeable the better. An intensive session of this for a couple of minutes will usually be sufficient to make yourself absolutely sick of it, and your mind will be only too happy and relieved to let it go. But whatever you do, don’t fight against it. Now if the tune happens to be one you particularly like and don’t want to have spoiled for future enjoyment, then don’t worry. When you want to enjoy it again, just do the opposite. Sing or hum it over again in its normal and likeable format in a relaxed way, until if feels right again.
