Guest guest
To anyone who is wondering why I had two revisions since my original surgery.. here are the reasons.. I had open RNY gastric bypass in Dec 2000... I had a minor wound infection 9 days post op .. This infection developed into a mild cellulitis and took several weeks to clear with very potent antibiotics.. At 4 months post op, my staple line completely unzipped.. called a staple line disruption.. and I developed a marginal ulcer on my stoma that perforated and caused peritonitis..The ulcer also spread to the back of my liver.. I had to have a revision to resect the ulcer, and transect my stomach.. Transection is when the stomach is surgically divided into two separate parts...this is much better than staple lines..If a staple line disruption or ulcer happens, it is not your fault, or something you did.. it is a mechanical faillure of the surgery and repairable . My second and most recent revision was to reconstruct my pouch.. I had a rare complication.. the surgeon had only seen about 20 cases of this prior to me.. Atonic pouch... means that the pouch has no ability to move food/ liquids through the pouch into the stoma and ultimately into the small intestine.. He was able to reconstruct my pouch and for the first time since my original surgery, I have had three complete weeks with no nausea/ no vomiting.. However, when he went in to do this revision, he discovered that I had developed a grapefruit sized incisional hernia just below the breasts that had to be repaired, a massive hiatal hernia that had to be repaired, three feet of mangled, cemented together intestines..caused by my previous peritonitis, that had to be removed and discarded before I had a full blown bowel obstruction, and he also bypassed more small intestines as I wanted to be distal vs proximal.. I am doing fabulous for three weeks post op from this last surgery... I would have the surgery all over again , even knowing that I would have problems.. Just understand that many people have this surgery and never have even one small complication.. They lose weight, and become and stay healthier , if they learn to educate themselves on nutrition , and supplementations after surgery.
