Hi Janet, I have been type 1 for almost 30 years, I don't like to say

this but there are no borderline diabetics. You either have it or

you don't, I live in Canada and your numbers are a little high, the

normal range for blood sugars are 3 to 5, I would get a referal to an

endocronoligist to get some advice from a pro. Some doctors really

don't know what they are talking about when it comes to Diabetes. I

would also check your local hospitals for Diabetic Education Centers

like M.E.D.E.C. they are a wealth of info and help, also check around

to see if there are any support groups in your area. These will be

helpful in dealing with this. Most importantly is exercise and

follow the diet, I find walking helps alot, you will want to build

muscle in your legs to fend off neuropathy's. I have been through

hell and back with my Diabetes, and I have experienced almost

everyting from hypoglycemia to coma (twice) so if you need advice

please ask. I hope to hear from you.

According to the standards set by the American Diabetes Association...

there is no such thing as a borderline diabetic. I am assuming that the 10

or 8 is a hemoglobin A1C test... and even if it was an 8 that is BAD control.

You need to get a referral to an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) and

get your self checked out. I almost died from a family doctor trying to

treat my diabetes incorrectly.

It would be interesting to know what your lab's standard numbers are, Janet. With some labs, an A1c level over 6 should have attention. With others, it's anything over 4.5. There may be others, too. I can understand how feels about family doctors treating diabetes, but mine is excellent. He takes continuing ed classes on diabetes and keeps a Certified Diabetes Educator on staff. A local endocrinologist, on the other hand, said that a glucose level of 165 two hours after eating was good control -- which it's NOT. So, there are good and bad docs, both in family practice and endocrinology. The trick is to find a good one.

Hi Meenie, Janet and list,

In Canada (I'm on the west coast of Canada) readings of 8 and 10 could

easily be derived from a static reading of your Blood Glucose levels (what you

get when you use your meter to check BG's). While the standard measurement used

in Canada, and most places outside the USA, is millimoles per liter (mmol/L),

the traditional miligrams per diciliter (mg/dL) is still the most common

standard of measurement inside the USA. If you multiply your mmol/L reading by

18 you will have a very close approximation of your mg/dL reading.

Here is a conversion chart.

mmol/l mg/dl

------ -----

2.0 35

3.0 55

4.0 75

5.0 90

5.5 100

6.0 110

8.0 150

10.0 180

11.0 200

15.0 270

16.5 300

20.0 360

22 400

Hi Janet and list,

" bg " is an abbreviation for " Blood Glucose " and " meter " refers to the device

used to check Blood Glucose levels.

I think all of us on the list can identify with that feeling of being

overwhelmed when we first start to deal with this disease. Have no fear you

will find all the help you need here on this list. The Diabetes Dictionary at

this site should help you get started.

Margie,

Naproxen is Allieve like someone else mentioned.

My Rheumetologist put me on 6 pills a day and

about 3 months late I had a colonoscopy .

That doctor took me off of them because she

said I had worn spots in my intenstine and she

was sure they were from this. The directions on

the bottle even say not to use them after a certain

time period--like 2 weeks of continuous use-once in

ahwile is OK.

I found out that Tylenol is the safest over the counter

drug than any of them--Now not everyone can take Tylenol

or it even works for them?

I don't want to you to wind up in more trouble than you

started.
