I've heard that this can happen during chelation sometimes and that it is

because the auditory channel is opening up. This could be a good thing...

Hang in there...

Yes, My son has started covering his ears and crying . Actually he hadn't done

this ever before chelation. If it persists throughout the summer we

will do some sort of AIT with him. I'll have to look into Tomatis.

,

Thanks for the encouragement! I hate to press - where did you hear this from?

I'd like to confirm this (i.e., chelation aiding opening up the auditory

channel). This would be extremely helpful in my son's case as his auditory

defensiveness has really formed the " center " of his ASD. Can anyone else help?

Thanks and God Bless!

How old is your son and what are the details of his chelation (DMSA or DMPS,

ALA, dosage, how long has he been on it...)? Had he ever demonstrated auditory

defensiveness prior to chelation? Does he have (vocal) language? Thanks in

advance.

We started with DMSA only the weekend after thanksgiving, slowly working up to

200

mg every 4 hours with no negative side effects. No big gains, but more focused

at

school, and more imitation skills emerging.

Tristan is 6, 48 lbs. and nonverbal.

For the most part he seemed to be deaf before, only coming to his name when he

felt

like it. We had a sedated ABR done 3 years ago that showed everything working.

He never showed any problems with noise before at all.

A month ago we started him on 25mg ALA every 3 hours during the day, and 4 hours

at

night, weekends on, weekdays off.. After the first round it was as if he was

hearing

for the first time, and getting very overwhelmed with all of it! We're getting

about

5 spontaneous words a week, but he refuses to try intentionally with any of us.

It's only coming when he is frustrated, like the other day my 13 yr. old son put

him

on the potty, and the 13 yr. old laid down on the floor between Tristan and the

door. When Tristan was done, he looked at Dorian and said " GET UP " attitude and

all!!!

Blessings,

Alright everyone - 's son is 6 years old and 48 lbs and gets up to 200 mg

every four hours (dmsa). My son (Steve) is 3 years old and 40 lbs. and his

doctor won't let us go above 20 mg every three hours (maximum, period, finito)

from a starting point of just 2 mg every three hours. Is my doctor underdosing

my son? Thanks!

I think that you have to make a decision based upon how your

child tolerates the lower dose, and then temper your enthusiasm if

you see improvements, trying not to be overzealous!

I have been hoping to get similar information from the new protocol

which has not yet materialized.

We started last July 2000, with 25 mg of DMSA and ALA every 3 hours

for our then 7 year old daughter who weighed about 71 lbs. (ie based

upon 1/4 - 1/2 mg per lb so we were about midway at the mid range.)

We had been very cautious in watching her for side effects or

reactions, and eventually raised the dose to 100 mg of each (3 hours

for ALA and 4 hours for DMSA (captomer)), only this past March. We

have actually started with 200 mg, and with the idea that the " half

life " is 3 or 4 hours use 100 mg to make up the metabolized half.

Recently we also began reducing the dose to 50 mg for the last few

rounds and also doing DMSA only for the last round or two or three,

all of which seem to be in the right direction. We had been having

good results with the 33 mg level and raised to 50 and then 100,

based on reports related to the survey Lyn Redwood posted before the

DAN conference when we seemed to be at the very low end. I am trying

not to be overzealous, and constantly reflect on my potential to over

do it. We did an 8 day pewriod over the Easter schoiol vacation at

the 100 mg level, and concluded that we overdid it.

We waited 2 weeks to resume, and now feel that 3 or 4 days is our

maximum limit. To be sure, we have had very notable improvements

over the past 10 months using ALA and DMSA. Language, singing,

riding a scooter, and almost a bike without training wheels, as well

as very improved bowel function top our list. She really is

communicating much better, though she is certainly still very

impaired. My real rough estimate is that we may have come 20% in the

past 10 months, so I think that we have a long way to go, but at

least we are going in the right direction!

I would encourage everyone to have steadfast patience, and closely

watch their child while detoxing them. If I am to err, I would

rather err on the safe side. Adults report terrible side effects

from overdoing it. This weekend, I plan to lower ALA to 50 mg again,

to see if the subtle discomforts we think we noted last time

disappear. DMSA at 100 mg has not seemed to be a problem, so I think

that it is time to vary the dose between the 2 substances, or to buy

the proper equipment and create my own mini pharmacy. The way we

spilt our doses by the way is to disolve the capsule contents in

tang, and divide the volumes after pouring back and forth between

containers several times.

I noticed cycles of more auditory sensativity when I was detoxing and we've

had this with my son as well. Using a home auditory training program like

Samonas or NACD's new The Listening Program that you can redo without paying

thousands of dollars really helps this.

Maybe Andy will pipe in here as well, but I vaguely remember him saying that

200mg, though twice as much as 100 mg, isn't much more effective. Our

doctor wanted us to get to this level because it is what the PDR recommends for

chelating Lead, which Tristan also has.

Regarding the chelation opening up the auditory channel, I don't know

this to be a fact, but I did hear this from several very highly

respectable occupational therapists. After 14 rounds of doing chelation ,

my son seems to be less auditorily defensive. He seemed to be more so

when we first started chelating.

My 5 yr old has an atypical hearing loss (and ausitory processing delay)

attributed to heavy metal poisoning. At our last appointment, the

audiologist said there was a little improvement in hair cell movement.

He was encouraged that we might see more improvement with additional

chelation. (We are chelating using 25 mg DMSA every 4 hours during " on "

days.)

With " improved " hearing, he has displayed more sensitivity to noise. I

hope that this is only temporary as he learns to adapt to the extra

" noise " he is now hearing.

Hi

My son hears more noises than anyone I know .. He always asks what is that

noise and that noise. He can hear a car before anyone else.. It is like some

supersonic hearing... What does that mean. kelly

I don't know what it means, but I am an adult with this problem.

Sometimes, I can't sleep at night because I hear every little noise.

Some sounds actually hurt my ears. I can't stand music unless it is

very quiet, or vacuum cleaners, etc. The radio or television drive me

nuts. I can only guess it is some mercury caused thing.

, Sheela,

It's called hypersentive hearing or hyperacuity and quite common among those

with ASD diagnoses. They can also hear the blood rushing in their veins, the

buzz of lights, etc. and makes learning quite difficult. For more on the

subject, read Anabel Stehli's " Dancing in the Rain " and " Sound of A Miracle " .

See also the website for AIT (Auditory Integration Training).

A lot of our kids do. It's part of the hyper-hypo responses of their bodies

to the world.

Hi

I have a similar problem I guess. I have a really hard time sleeping with

noise of any sort.. except a fan .... I need my fan...The radio my sister

played really low drove me nuts as a kid. Even after she turned it down to

almost nothing I still could not sleep.. .. I remember asking my family

when I was little , if they could hear me chewing my food it was so loud in

my head. Noises from loud flourescents bug me.. I guess it is in me too.

Same with tv and radio unless I am actively listening or watching.. lights in

the stores always seemed to bright too.

Besides containing mercury, fluroescent lights' flicker may cause seizures in

My son can hear the neighbors in the house two yards behind us when

all the doors and windows are closed. He will tell me what they are

saying. :-0

When Austin did AIT he tested above and below the normal

range in hearing.

I have trouble hearing when over stimulated. Buzzing lights,

ticking clocks, saws, blowers, and the sound of electric guitars

literally make me sick to my stomach, too much noise at one time and

I tune out. Electric guitars make me loose it. :-(

The positive side is that I can tell what will bother my son because

it usually bugs me too.

He really dislikes the registers at the grocery stores - the ones

with the scanners that beep every time an item is run across them.

I can hear the blood rushing in my veins when I lay down. Some nights

it can be so loud that it is hard to sleep. :-(

My mother & two of my sisters have very sensitive hearing too.

I will be replacing my amalgams and chelate soon.

My nephew kept waking up at 4 a.m. (like clock-work :) ) for no apparent (to my

bro and sis-n-law) reason. They finally discovered that the neighbors next door

(winter, windows closed) had their alarm set for that time!

When the body needs to borrow nutrients for vital organ function or after

surgery, trauma, shock, etc. it borrows from hearing and vision. For those

seeing increased hearing it's a sign of healing which may take a while for the

individual to grow accustomed to! For those with new found hypersensitivity the

brains of those individuals may have developed new pathways in the interim to

compensate for the lack???

A month or so ago I mentioned looking for a school which would allow me to

create my own Master's...I've applied at Antioch University Seattle for their

Environment and Community Master's Program. I'll let folks know if I get

accepted.

Hi all,

I know this has been discussed before, so apologize if I am being repetitive.

I have been discussion chelation with my DAN doctor since October! This is

becoming more and more frustrating as he keeps holding me off for one reason

or another.

Anyway, he just had me do a stool test (as an afterthought) and said he had

to have that now before we start. We already ran blood work several times.

I am waiting for the stool tests results to speak with him again about

getting started.

In the meantime, I have my son scheduled to start AIT in July. Now I am

considering moving this up to the end of June due to a recommendation from

credible people to change the audiologist to do the AIT. So now it is

starting to look like we will be faced with starting both AIT and chelation

almost at the same time.

I don't think this is a very good idea to say the least. My feeling is that

it is probably better to start the chelation first, but I am feeling torn as

I know that he has hypersensitivity to noise and am anxious to get started

with the AIT.

I have also seen postings from some of you that did AIT, saw improvements in

your child and then saw the problems again after starting chelation.

Can anyone share your opinions here???

Thanks.

Cheryl

Thanks for your response.

I do give Alec magnesium - actually his sensitivity is not as bad as it used

to be. But, I know he still has this issue. We also do the epsom salt

baths!

We did try Taurine - but I'm not sure about the reaction. Both times that we

tried it, Alec had bowel and urine accidents! We need to do it one more time

to see if this was really the cause.

But, if I am reading you correctly, the chelation seems to provide the same

improvements and the AIT?

Thanks.

<< Cheryl,

If you are paying for AIT. I might wait. I did AIT with Jack two

times and the progress I have seen with the AIT is very similiar to

what I have seen with each cycle of chelation. ex, start hyper,

become more focused, cover ears. I have also read low magnesium can

cause hearing sensitivity. Andy mentions in his book taurine may

help keep some of the magnesium from being lost in the urine, check

with him, regarding taurine. If your son does not have any viral

issues, try epsom salt bath for increasing magnesium. >>
