Guest guest
Hi , That is a really interesting question. I have a patient who I am treating for extreme anxiety/depression. I gave her a sleep mix recently containing passiflora eschscholtzia tilea and chamomile. She instantly had very vivid dreams, but they were nightmares linked to her daytime anxiety (like she was re-living her day at night). I replaced the passiflora and eschscholtizia with valerian and scutellaria and the dreams instantly settled down. I wondered which herb had been causing the dreams.. I also had another patient earlier in the year who experienced more vivid dreams while taking a sleep mix of Chamomile, tilea and passiflora. I didn't relate the dreams to the sleep mix at the time, but perhaps there was a link. Why do you ask? Guest guest
A patient a while ago asked for passiflora not to be included in a sleep mix as it gave her vivid dreams. More recently I made a mix with passiflora, valerian and scutellaria for another patient who was OK but then upped dose by 5mls as exam stressed and started getting vivid dreams. Could of course be exam stress, could be dose related so she is finishing bottle at lower dose to see but then I remembered earlier patient. So was curious to see if anyone else had seen these effects. Yours and Sally's comments are very interesting. Maybe its not even the herbs but a reaction by the body to getting sleep in these very anxious patients. Passiflora and dreams Has anyone had any patients who have experienced an increase in dreams (not nightmares) with them becoming more vivid and remembering them on waking? Guest guest
Dear all, Surely it would be more peculiar if a herb that influenced sleep quality did not influence dreams? If we assume that dreams play a role in health, and I know I do, then problems with dreaming are likely to be part of the overall sleep problem. Perhaps the alterations in dreaming pattern are a necessary part of the movement back to a 'normal' sleep pattern. I do of course agree that a patient should not be un-necessarily subjected to nightmares, unless they also feel that the nightmares are playing a useful role. Guest guest
Fascinating discussion and observations. I have linked garlic juice to extremely vivid and rather unpleasant dreams which I have experienced on a number of occasions but none of my patients ever reported anything like that. I may start asking them more closely about that.
Guest guest
I have had several patients who have reported extremely vivid dreams with Valerian , and I have noticed this effect myself. I always think that it had to do with an unlocking of the subconcious, and therefore can be very healing, especially in patients that are in denial - case in point was a lady who came for help post breast cancer, but who had never really worked through or processed this huge event in her life. She woke in floods of tears, and was amazed by her own reaction. If the patient finds this is a problem, reduce the dose! Guest guest
I would agree about unlocking the subconscious - I had vivid dreams myself once after taking valerian , and the dreams involved entering previously locked rooms Sally O > I have had several patients who have reported extremely vivid dreams > with Valerian , and I have noticed this effect myself. Guest guest
Hi, I agree, we use sleep as a means to process what has gone on during the day and perhaps the herbs influence this process in some way. Helping us regain balance in our lives. I may take a large dose of passiflora before bed tonight and see what happens. Anyone else fancy experimenting on themselves? Guest guest
Effects of plants on dreams (oneirogenesis) is a fascinating topic. You may find this book interesting: Drugs of the Dreaming: Oneirogens: Salvia divinorum and Other Dream-Enhancing Plants By (author) Gianluca Toro & Foreword by Ott Oneirogenic experimentation forms part of a postgrad course that I am offering. Guest guest
How did you get on?! I have taken large doses of all (!) sleep herbs in the past and haven't made any direct associations, sometimes I get very vivid and memorable dreams anyway(including last night and no herbs taken). So will start looking for a pattern too. Passiflora and dreams Has anyone had any patients who have experienced an increase in dreams (not nightmares) with them becoming more vivid and remembering them on waking? Guest guest
I slept really well, but no vivid dreams (that I remember anyway). Perhaps it only works if you are having problems sleeping or are stressed about something. I will keep a close eye on this in the future though.
