I saw below there is discussion about gluten free. I'm a registered dietitian and I'd like to share something about going gluten free. I'm very passionate about my profession, and I think it's important to share this info with you so that you can be a little more informed before making your own decision about what to do.If you suspect you have a gluten allergy, you should really consider teaming up with a doctor with experience in testing for the allergy as well as a registered dietitian with experience in gluten allergies. If you are to undergo testing, its important to continue eat gluten. The reaction the doc is looking for won't be there if you are avoiding all gluten. (tests include blood work and biopsy)Gluten allergy is a true allergy. If your vegetable gets placed on bread and then removed, it is in fact contaminated. Even if you dont feel sick from it, since it is an allergic reaction in your GI tract, there is some damage done inside with every speck of gluten ingested. That why if you are TRULY allergic to gluten, it's important to follow strict guidelines. Otherwise you can place yourself at increased risk for diseases like colon cancer later on. I strongly discourage anybody from going to gluten free on your own. If you don't have a gluten allergy and you remove it all, one day you will want to add it back and you may find you can't tolerate/digest it. For the folks that do feel better on gluten free (that are not allergic) have you considered that it could be something else? Such as something else that HAPPENS to be in foods with gluten. For example, by cutting out gluten, you are cutting out A TON of less healthy foods by default- chips, pastries, processed crackers, greasy pizza, some foods w/high fructose corn syrup, etc. If you simply cut out these types of food you may find you feel better, but you can still eat the healthy grains like whole wheat breads, brown rice, etc. With out gluten you tend to eat more fruits and vegetables, or get omega fatty acids from fish, canola oil, flax, walnets. This could be the cause of you feeling better, not necesarily from the lack of gluten.One study I read suggests that all of the enriched and fortified foods may be providing some nutrients in extreme excess, causing people to feel better when they are removed. In those cases it's not the gluten causing the problem, but removing the gluten by default removes the heavy use of fortified/enriched foods.Just some food for thought =)I'd love to hear your resonses! It is hard at first, but there are tons of gluten companies out there now that you can order food from. And health food stores. I highly recommend this especially if you have IBS. Also big trigger for IBS is vit D deficiency so check you levels! My friend just spent 4 weeks in the hospital with this and learned she was severly deficient in D.D is also know as a skin vitamin.
