Jan,

You have written a summary of the events here -- send them to the NH

Ombudsperson for your county immediately!! Copies to the NH administrators as

well.

That is my first gut-level reaction and I am sure other things will come to

me. My father's Internist is also a NH physician and he would NEVER behave

this way with the family member of a patient. Like , I am livid as

well!

As for the UTI, this same GP/Internist has told me often that elders can

become symptomatic from bacterial levels below the testing thresholds. He

readily prescribes antibiotics if unusual behavioral symptoms, including those

you

have described, are present. Because of fears of community infection rates

I wonder if NHs have guidelines to stick more closely with the abnormal

levels as defined by lab cultures.

I wonder what the nursing staff thinks of this " physician "

Janet,

It is SO FRUSTRATING dealing with attitudes like the doctor you described.

I have stories of my own that infuriated me. I'm proud of how you handled

the whole situation.

Hi All,

Today, I went to visit Jim at the nh, it was dinner time when I arrived,

but Jim was not in the diningroom as he usually is. He was still in bed and

had been in bed all day. He was in a stupor again when I arrived in his

room. The CNA said, he has had a blank expression and very little

interacting with anyone.

I went to the head nurse on the floor to inquire about Jim and she pointed

and said, " His doctor is right there " I have never met Jim's doctor, so I

was excited I could finally talk with him at a time when I really had

concerns about Jim. I walked over to the nurse's station where he was

talking with a patient and I stood at the station waiting my turn

patiently. He looked up and glanced at me for a second and then continued

talking with the patient. After the patient left, he immediately went to

his chart and started writing stuff, never looking up to acknowledge me or

to say, I will be with you in a moment. I waited standing right in front of

him at the station, figuring he needed to write things in the chart so he

wouldn't forget what he needed to write about that lady he was speaking to

and he flipped page after page writing, so I said, " When you have time, I

would like to speak with you. " Never missing a beat in writing, he said,

" Who are you? " I said, " I am Jim

Colello's wife " he said, " oh " I told him I had concerns about Jim and asked

him if he had seen Jim today and he said, " Yes " never looking up, just kept

on writing. I said, " May I Have Eye Contact. "

He looked up and I said, " I am very concerned about my husband, this is not

his normal behavior " He said, " You know all these dementia patients get

that way " twirling his finger on the side of his head. The Coo Coo sign.. (

Ok, I have to let off some expletives here #$* & ^$#@! ) I couldn't believe

this doctor's attitude. I said, " I want him to go to emergency, something

is not right, this is not my husband's baseline " and he made a sound like

" Humpf " As if to say, yeah right. I told him, " I don't know what you see,

but in the 2 minutes that you are in his room once a week, you do not know

him and not once have you called me to ask his baseline nor have you cared

to know. "

I went back into Jim's room and the head floor nurse came in and said the

doctor called for Jim to be picked up and brought to emergency.

I went out and said, " Thank you doctor for calling for transportation for

Jim to go to emergency " He said, " I am not requesting it, you are the one

that has to say why he is there " I said, " fine "

Guess what, Jim has a UTI. For some reason it didn't show up when the

friggen nh doctor sent the speciman to the lab or when Jim had the UTI test

at the hosptial a few days ago, but now it shows up. Jim is on antibiotics

again. So, the poor guy had sodium loss and a UTI, no wonder he was so darn

confused and disoriented. I am going to have words about this doctor with

the admin staff. I want him changed immediately. He told me when I asked

for eye contact that he had lots of work to do and if I would excuse him,

he needed to get back to work. My husband is left in the room suffering

and this doctor didn't care enough to even talk with me about Jim's

symptoms or even acknowledge me standing there to speak with him. I am RED

with anger over the attitude this doctor had with me and they are surely

going to hear about it.

Hi, Jan,

I am just BOILING MAD at Jim's doctor. I can't even imagine how you must

have felt when you were talking to the doctor. It reminds me of when my dad's

internist told me we couldn't have home health care or hospice because there

was nothing wrong with dad. That was four months before he died after an

eight year battle with LBD. What is wrong with these doctors? I was so mad at

the doctor that day I felt like I was having an out of body experience! Hang

in there and stay after them!

Hugs,

Piper

P.S. You might need to have a lemon drop tonight!!

what I read. Call membership and put in a complaint

about the doctor. That will get the ball rolling.

Especially the coo coo sign. That was totally uncalled

for. He is a total @**!!!!! Jim is so lucky to have

you.!!! You are a true blessing to him!!!

Jan, i'm ******* angry with you. Some members might remember that i had a

similar situation twice with granda. The first time was when he was in hospital

and his mouth went black. They talked over him, under him, treated him like crap

and my mum went to the patient liason services, don't know if you have anything

similar but boy did they treat him with dignity and respect after that, we even

had a personal phone call of apology at home. The second time was the last week

of his life. He was suffering aponea which was lasting over 40 seconds at a

time. We knew we were at the end but this bloody stupid nurse kept insisting he

was fine. I demanded to see the doctor and had to bring my mum and aunt in. This

nurse insisted that the DR was too busy so i marched by her and said' never mind

you silly cow i'll get him myself'. The time for being polite is gone, Jim needs

you to do the talking for him so sock it to the B******S.

Let these idiots feel the force of your anger if need be, their paid to have

Jims best interests at heart not to let him suffer.

Hi Jan,

Incredible!!*%$# I don't even know where to start. Hope you can

find a better replacement doctor. ly, you are better than any

doctor he could have. But you don't need the frustration of dealing

with someone like him. And you hope to get good treatment when YOU

do identify that there is a problem.

Hope Jim is feeling better soon and that you can replace that doc

with someone decent. What a loser.

HI Jan,

Is this guy for real????? What an @^%$%^^ & . When you get a minute I would

speak to the powers that be at the LTCF. How dare this doctor behave in this

way. This is entirely unprofessional!

Ron,

I want to underscore everything you have said to Jan. I'm sure many people get

into the helping professions with the best of intentions but when they find

themselves burnt out they need to leave or change their jobs entirely.

I wouldn't be surprised if this doctor hasn't gotten other family complaints.

Jan, I could swear you are standing in my shoes

several months ago. It is so frustrating to not be

able to get anywhere with the medical profession. As

I told you once, I don't think they want to treat the

elderly that they can't cure - they want success, and

if they know it can't be had, they just write the

person off. The dr. at the hospital told me " we can't

do anything more for him " and dismissed him back to

the NH, even with a feverm=, a very high wbc, never

dx'd as to what it was. And, I've also thought that

doctors that are hospitalists (if you don't have them

there, they just work in the hospitals and don't have

a practice), in nursing homes, and at some of the

walk-in clinics maybe can't make it in private

practice. Nevertheless, his attitude towards you was

entirely unprofessional, and he should certainly be

reported to local county or state associations or to

the AMA. Did anyone else hear the conversation? To

use that gesture is one that we used to do as kids -

you would think he would know better than to stoop

that low. We know that they have dementia, but that

doesn't mean that they're not persons.

If it wouldn't be too confusing for him, and if it

were possible to move him, it would certainly be worth

looking into, but you never know what the next one

would be like either. I thought several times about

moving Darrell, but when I talked to other people,

every NH had people who thought it was great and

others who thought it was terrible. So, I just

decided it wasn't worth upsetting him, especially when

he was getting so bad.

I hope the hospital can help him. Don't understand

why the UTI didn't show up while he was there, but the

hospital where Darrell was told me he didn't have

pneumonia, but 4 days later, it was listed as the

cause of death. It's just maddening.

Hang in there, and don't let that doctor off the

hook!!

Jan,

For two days I have been reading about the HORRIFIC TREATMENT that you

received from Jim's Dr. Given the circumstances, I think you handled the

situation " Miracurously " well.

If I had been there , I would not have been nearly as nice as you were.

Blessings will be with you all the days of your life.

What I was thinking is if we ( the lbdgroup) had the Dr.'s email address then

we could all email him and express our displeasure in his professionalism.

Maybe he might take a second look at his patient relations.

What do the rest of you think?
