Guest guest
Hi all, Does anyone have experience of treating alopecia? I am currently treating a woman in her early 30's who has had alopecia on and off since she was 17. It seems to be linked to stress and 'burn out from the rat race'. She is currently on: Verbana 15 Valariana 1:2 5 Scutellaria 1:2 10 Rosmarinus 10 Zaxnthox 10 Carduus 10 Calendula 15 Galium 10 Urtica 20 5ml tds Tea: tds 40 Pariateria 30 Buchu 30 I also prescribed a Hair rub containing TRs of Gentiana, burdock, urtica, calendula and eo's of lavendula, chamomilla Rosmarinus and eucalyptus. She has been taking herbs since 13/4/07 but reacted to the first prescription containing equisetum with hives. This resolved once the equisetum was removed (not sure if this was coincidence or not but the last time she had hives she was also taking equisetum) She has two patches of hair loss. The smaller patch is growing back, but she has a large patch at the back of her head which is still increasing in size and one of her eyebrows has now fallen out. She is finding her condition increasingly distressing and is going to get an expensive and time consuming treatment in London where they sew hair into your hair to make it appear thicker. I was wondering about adding eleuthrococcus or glycyrrhiza to her mix. Does anyone have any other insights into how to treat this condition or how quickly to expect results? She is questioning whether to continue with the herb or not and I am not sure what to advise... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jean
Guest guest
A specific diagnosis on what sort of alopecia helps...diffuse alopecia often due to low serum ferritin, which may be her problem exacerbated by stress, or an element of androgenic alopecia..For low serum ferritin, I'd give Gentiana or Art abs in her mix to improve iron absorption, increase nervines and adaptogens, and ensure good iron-rich, low GL breakfast, good lunch, and less supper..lots of mineral rich foods - parsley, seaweed (wakame etc). Guest guest
Hi I have recently had quite good success with a patient that has had to wear a wig for the last 15 years, using high dose Biotin (500mcg bid), backed up with a B-50 complex, fish oils, Vit C rich foods, nuts & seeds and a silicon supplement called Biosil (cheaper if you get it from the states, e.g. from www.iherb.com). This was accompanied by a topical conditioning treatment (i.e. gently massage and leave in over night or as long as possible and wash with the simplest shampoo you can find) - combination of Avocado oil, Almond oil, Vit E oil, Bringaraj oil, Rosemary E.O., Tangerine E.O. I would also definately have her ferritin levels checked (not just Hb, RBC etc.). If this is low try something like Spatone or Florasine (a combination of Fe, glycine and lycine from Lamberts), especially if the patient is a vegetarian. This would need to be continued for several months to restore ferritin levels. Good luck, gursewa harrad. Hi all, Does anyone have experience of treating alopecia?
