This morning I had ' another ' horrifying experience.

I woke, took a shot of my albuteral, as usual. Took a few sips of water and walked to the bathroom.

I know better than to try to exert myself , first thing in the morning, at least until I've cleared my lungs of the phlem that clogs me. This morning, I tried to make coffee too early. As I was coughing up sputum, something ' got stuck ' in my lungs. I suspect it was a plug. I took another sip of water, that didn't help.

Next thing I know, I'm gasping for air. I could feel the blockage in my bronchi..the air wasn't getting past it to get deep enough into my lungs. This has happened to me one other time, about a month ago. I had my room mate dial 911. And I struggled to breathe, like a fish out of water..it hurt, I was so scared..and I sweated..profusely, I sweated. ( I'm normally not a sweater, but I was working VERY HARD to get a breath! )

Finally, I don't know how I managed it, but I was able to somehow get a breath..nothing fantastic, nothing significant, but enough to allow me to not pass out. And then slowly, very slowly, I started to regain composure and control of my breathing. Then I began to cough it up and out. FINALLY!

Now, an hour later, I'm ok..and I've been able to clear my airway.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I swear, friends, I thought I was clocking out.

Sandie, I've had extreme coughing spasms that made me think I was dying ... I cough & cough sooo hard and not able to get a breath inbetween ... I feel like I'm choking (hey, I am choking!) and my throat is closing off ... it's really scary. Once it's over I am absolutely wiped out, throat sore, etc.

Louise

I can empathize, Louise. However, this went one step further. I absolutely could not take a breathe in. It was as if there was a film of saran wrap over my mouth, suffocating me. When ever I tried to get a breath it was blocking anything from going in..no air ..I'm sure something was getting thru or I would've passed out..

Dear Sandie, that sounds awful. I have had to cough hard and sweat and cry al at once but never felt I'd pass out. Hope you're feeling better!

I must remind you guys..Bronchiectasis is secondary for me. My Primary lung disorder is Alpha1 Antitrypsin Deficiency ( I'm lung symptomatic, COPD/Emphysema)..the bronchiectasis only compounds my already failing weak lungs..

Sandie, all I can say, thank God you were able to get some air in someway ... suffocating, or feeling as if you are, is horrible. I tell people that when you can't breathe, not much else matters. Not long after I went through the respiratory failure I read that suffocation is how Christ died on the cross. He went through more physical pain than I ever will and all for those who come to faith in Him. It put an entirely new perspective on what I deal with as well as on my life in general. I also read in The Purpose Drive Life book that "no pain is ever wasted". That helps me a lot.

Sure hope you're feeling better!

Hi Sandie,

This sounds frightening, you poor thing. I have never had an episode with a mucus plug like that. However, I do feel very short of breath in the mornings, and can't do very much until I have a nebuliser of ventolin, atrovent and saline. I have had a few scary episodes of struggling for air after walking up hills, etc. so I know how awful it feels.

I hope you are feeling better now, Sandie. Have you thought of using a nebuliser in the morning rather than a puffer? I find it very helpful, as I sit and relax for ten minutes, while the medication opens my airways. Once I can start breathing easier, I can have breakfast and get moving.

Take care,

Love Bunny
