I would be interested in knowing about this too. I'm wanting to recommend a brace that is less complicated than the A Trac. Has anyone tried the MuttKnee brace? Recently saw a patient with bilat CCLX's (and spinal issues as well) that the owner had purchased this product herself. Seems much simpler than the ATrac and once we were able to wrangle the pup into the brace, seemed to do ok with them. I just wanted to know if anyone else has used them.Thank you, Shinas, LVT, CCRPLas Vegas Veterinary Referral Center

Hello all,

As a certified orthotist, my contention about bracing to limit the cranial

drawer is that you need to use plastic instead of fabric to be able to apply a

direct enough force to have a chance to limit this pathological motion. Fabric

can stretch and distort and is not able to direct a strong enough counterforce

to limit the motion. (no matter what force system you use) Plastic is more

structurally sound thus can.

To steal some country music lyrics...fabric makes the noise, plastic does the

work.

I'm not an orthotist and don't play one on TV. But I have to second their opinion that a casted, rigid, custom made brace is the way to go. We just put our first one (I think it is from K9 Orthotics) on a Westie and were immediately pleased with the results. Despite the fact that we have to send the harness section back for adjustment, we liked the way the rigid brace seemed to help the stifle. I wouldn't waste my time on an OTC fabric product. Of course, this is the first brace we'd done so obviously my experience is limited.
