Guest guest
We're contemplating starting my dad on Provigil the next time he goes to the neuro (about 2 weeks). We had spoken with him at the last appointment and he okayed it--but my mom knew about the possible effects on the heart and declined since he'd had a heart attack in 2004. My dad has gone downhill since then and I think she's ready to see if it will improve his alertness and willingness to get out of bed and his lazy boy chair. The good thing is that the effects are seen pretty rapidly (according to what had said--within a couple of days), and it can be stopped immediately if there is a problem or no improvement. I would be like Lin and want to start out very low (at 50 mg?). But if there is no change then should we discontinue it or try a stronger dose? I'm still not sure about giving it to my Mom because 1) the doctor stressed how it has side effects and how it really isn't indicated for her at this point (which I know) and 2) my Mom is in the late stage of the disease and I don't know if it would do anything. More importantly, maybe she would just like to be left alone. It's a hard decision. What I'm glad to hear from you is that I can stop it immediately. I think the doctor's words of possible side effects to the heart, etc. is what bothered me. But I certainly would start her on a very small dose. Did you see a difference with the 50 mg? ------------ --------- --------- ------ Welcome to LBDcaregivers.
