Elbow brace

Hello everyone, looking into various companies for an elbow brace for a 8 yrs

old, male, neutered Labrador with DJD on both elbow joints, Left more severely

affected than RIght. Some joint effusion, calcification of tendons around the

joint. Joint restriction movement imposed by the well condintioned dog, so as to

avoid full flexion of left elbow and thus pain.

I have contacted and have recieved feedback from AnimalOrthosis, K9orthosis and

Orthopets. I was wondering if anyone has any experience/suggestion with such a

case and experience with the orthosis companies?

Kind regards,

Natalia Kontogeorgou

I havze had the pleasure of working with Jeff and his team at k9 orthotics on a couple cases. The were extremely helpful to me, tbe braces were  well made and very functional, they arrived in under 2 weeks from the day I took the casts, and the clients are thrilled as are the dogs.

I haven't worked with them on elbow or shoulders but the carpal brace gave one family their dog back and he still uses the brace over a year later. The other was bilateral stifle orthotics about a month ago, she will go for surgery but now she can run and play and get strong in preparation for her ccl repairs.

Hope this helps,

Rhea

Happy Friday, all.I just got the forwarded email from one of the surgeons I work with a lot. I have NO experience with elbow braces, but appreciate any input from those of you who do. Or even just have an opinion :)Thanks in advance-Carol Helfer, DVMCanine Peak PerformanceSports Medicine & Physical RehabilitationPortland, ORTo: cjhelfer@...Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2012 16:39:17 +0000Subject: elbow brace

Hi Carol

I have an 11 y/o lab with a left elbow issue. I took the fmcp out years ago and has continued to develop OA. The owners are interested in a brace. Do you know of any that may be useful?

Have a great day!

Hi Carol

TGIF!!! This was a crazy week with the full moon and all.

Yes an orthotic brace can help decrease discomfort with OA in dogs. Orthopets makes a nice one.

Hello Carol,

A elbow brace can work AND to be successful you need to do a bit of screening

first. The size and shape of the dog is important.

1. The humerous needs to be long enough to apply pressure medially. fmcp calls

for a varus deformity correction, thus the corrective 3 point forces are 1. a

lateral directed force on the medial distal ulna. 2. a medial directed force on

the lateral joint and 3. a lateral directed force on the medial proximal most

humerous.

This 3rd force is the most complicated to achieve because of the axilla

connection is so different between breeds in how much humerous you can access.

2. Small breeds are not good candidates because the medial joint of the brace

can rub on the chest wall.

Hope this helps
