Guest guest
Hi Jim,So sorry to hear about this new wrinkle. I really don't know what is happening for you; I can only relate my own personal experience. I've had all sorts of muscle spasms and have found that they all point to depletion of electrolytes, especially potassium. Mag is important, but potassium is what does it for me. Whenever I have a rock-hard agonizing spasm that can't be broken with stretching, it seems that my muscles need potassium. I try to get enough in my diet, but I think with all the hydration that goes with S & C, the detoxing of epsom baths, detox-sweating, I lose potassium faster than a healthy diet can replace it. This muscle issue also includes the smooth muscles of the gut and whole alimentary canal (swallowing). I always used to have stomach cramps in hot weather until I figured out I was losing potassium too rapidly. The cautionary side of this is that if there are kidney issues, one has to be careful of too much potassium. Perhaps the use of lots of magnesium may also require more potassium; I don't know. Just my 2¢. Hope you get to the root of this soon!Be well,Léna Hi everyone, I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for 6 months... I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the most part, DMSO keeps it in check. However, over the past 6 months I am getting terrible spasms in that leg's foot, my wife says these are nothing, she also gets them. But I get them 2 - 3 times weekly. Well two nights ago I was sound asleep, awoke to go pee and as I was getting up, the other leg's (non-Lyme knee) calf muscle went into a terrible spasm, I was standing the other leg and the one in spasm was actually rapped around the leg I was standing on as tight as it could be. The pain was the worse I ever experienced. unbearable, it made my worst migraine feel like a tiny headache. And of course there was nothing I could do to stop the spasm. I was nearly in tears it hurt so much as was about to dial 911, when it let up just a bit and about 15 minutes later I was able to walk on it, I then fell back asleep and the leg was okay 4 hours later when I awoke. Well today I was moving some wood chips on my property, did 35 wheelbarrows in a little over 2 hrs, so I was pushing it and when I was done, I could barely walk. I came into the house and aimed for the recliner. After about an hour, my right leg (Lyme knee leg) was in spasm just above the right ankle, first time ever there, so tried to get up and as the leg support of the recliner started to fold down, my other leg let went into terrible spasm again, this time just above the knee in the back, this is called the bicep feroris muscle, and it took me right down to the ground, again nearly in tears. Home alone, I wanted to call 911, could not reach the phone.... I finally made it on to the couch after about 5 minutes, but as I started lowering my back down, it intensified again, and again this was the worst pain I have experienced. So I got myself up to a half sitting position and the spasm eased a bit.. . After a while I got up and made it to the fridge were I has an ancient script of Flexeril, this is a muscle relaxer, took one and am somewhat better right now, by very slow walking, legs are weak and that muscle is still in spasm, although better... As many of you may know, it is believed end stage Lyme is ALS and when I look at the symptoms of ALS I definitely have been having the cramping of muscles now for at least 6 months and also leg weakness comes and goes, is better now since I started mag oil.. Another symptom I have is at times I do have problems swallowing, even water.. Earlier today I tried sipping some water and had to spit it out, could not swallow... So this is really getting to be a big concern for me now, especially after the episode a few nights ago and again just a little while ago. Okay, I am taking Vit E, 800 IU and of course tons of magnesium, I would say average is 1600 mg elemental daily... Anyone have any ideas on what I can take to stop these spasms? Thanks, Jim
Guest guest
Hi Jim,So sorry to hear of your great pain. Hopefully, it's just an out of sync thing.I remember Doug Maclean saying that there were times when he hit Lyme, especially in his knees, that a major portion of his leg would swell and would be very painful. One time I think it lasted for 6 months, then spontaneously went away. Sounds like 2 hours of wheel barrowing may have stirred something up.Extra prayers to you! Guest guest
Hi Lena, Thanks for this, I never thought of potassium.... Which sent me into a search and I now find a lack of calcium, potassium or magnesium can cause spasms... Sometimes I supplement calcium, sometimes I don't, so I better get more in me... i don't supplement potassium, so I guess I will start.. I sure was sweating major big time moving these chips, so perhaps this caused todays episode... Do you take your potassium as a supp or do you have a script for it? I've had spasms before, but these are horribly painful, much different than before... Guest guest
Hi Jim,I take a 595mg potassium gluconate tab as a supplement, every day. More, if cramps or spasms happen. It's also very important for the heart muscle!Hope this helps.Be well,Léna Hi Lena, Thanks for this, I never thought of potassium.... Guest guest
Hi Jim, Do you spray magnesium directly on the calf muscle. I find that this seems to resolve the spasm pretty quickly. Also, I just went in and had a Glutathione, Magnesium and Vitamin C IV several hours after a DMPS injection and I think occasional Magnesium injections or IVs are really helpful if you have a doc that will do them. I get spasms in my calves at night too and they are excruciating, so I know what you are going through, it is a conundrum because chelating metals also chelates minerals and then these microbes live on the Magnesium in our body, so I never know if when I supplement it if I am just feeding them. . > > > Hi everyone, > > I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for 6 months... > > I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the most part, DMSO keeps it in check. Guest guest
Hi , I actually don't have any swelling and aside from the terrible muscle spasms, no pain... And this is my left leg and have not had any issues with it in the past except for a knee issue of which felt exactly like a Lyme knee issue. But I haven't had any issues with this knee now for 2 years... Either I have stirred up something or as Lena suggest a low potassium issue, which can also mean my calcium is not in balance... No doubts my mag levels are now much better with high daily supplementation of citrate and mag oil... What does concern me is these are symptom of ALS... So hopefully taking more calcium and potassium may resolve this... And, overall, I am feeling much better, so I hope this is just these supps being out of balance.... This spasm pain was the worst ever and the very worst pain I have ever felt.. Thanks, Jim > > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for 6 > > months... > > > > I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the most > > part, DMSO keeps it in check. Guest guest
Thank you ! I have EmergenC and will start on it immediately... I don't have potassium, so would have to order it in.... I just checked the potassium in EmergenC, 200 mg, RDA is 3500 I usually eat 1 or 2 bananas and an orange daily, thought I was getting enough from the, apparently not... Looking at potassium supps, they are all sold as 99mg, and labeled to take 1 daily. I presume there must be a limit on the mgs that can be sold... I know most foods have potassium in them, so maybe just small amounts are needed to supplement... I do know if one gets too much potassium in them, can actually kill... Thanks, Jim > > > > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > > > I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for > > > > 6 months... > > > > > > > > I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the > > > > most part, DMSO keeps it in check. Guest guest
Hi Jim, One other thing, Tri Salts by Ecological formulas is a powder that has both Magnesium and Potassium. I stir it in water and drink it down just before bed and that also really helps. > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for 6 months... > > > > I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the most part, DMSO keeps it in check. Guest guest
Hi Jim old friend,Don't even think of ALS, yet. I think it's far more likely to be DOOFUS: that's a crazy man pushing FAR too many wheel-barrow loads, and not balancing his minerals and electrolytes.Forgive me for pointing this out, but you have done this to yourself before. Moderation in Florida heat doesn't appear to be one of your virtues. When you feel good, you go full bore! =)So you need me to scold you. (It's a dirty little job, but someone's got to do it)Be well, in spite of yourself,Léna Hi , I actually don't have any swelling and aside from the terrible muscle spasms, no pain... Guest guest
Hi Jim,The stuff I take is Mason Natural, Potassium Gluconate 595mg extended release. And of course I try to get it in my potatoes, bananas, etc. I take more when needed.Be well,Léna Thank you ! Guest guest
Hi Lena, I did find that NOW makes Potassium Gluconate in powder form, recommended is one tsp daily, this is 540 mg, so more in line with what you are taking... I still don't get all the pill forms are 99mg... They also recommend on their label to take with L-Tyrosine, Magnesium and Taurine... I only need to get the Potassium, as Jim's pharmacy already has the other three!! :-) Thanks, Jim > > > > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > > > I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for > > > > 6 months... > > > > > > > > I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the > > > > most part, DMSO keeps it in check. Guest guest
Hi , Well you might say I am spraying mag oil on the calf muscle now... I haven't been, I normally put it on the front of my legs so I can lay down while it is being absorbed... After I was able to walk last night, I put DMSO on the bicep feroris muscle, this is the one that caused the spasm last night, the DMSO helped... Then later I used the mag oil on all parts of my legs and will from now on... I sure don't want to feel this terrible pain ever again.. I seldom complain about pain as I have pain meds I am always on, 24/7, yet these muscle spasms broke right through these meds... That's scary.... I just wonder if the pain could have been worse if I was not on these pain meds... Nah, couldn't be, I would never have been able to stand anything worse than what I did last night. Well lets make a deal, if either of us finds a solution, we tell the other.. :-) I do use a lot of mag oil, but the cramps I had on my Lyme knee leg started long before I started the mag oil... Actually, now that I think of it, these spasms are now better since I started using the mag oil on my feet as I have peripheral neuropathy in both of them thanks to Flagyl and it was Shan who told me the mag oil cured his PN in his feet... Take care, Jim > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for 6 months... > > > > I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the most part, DMSO keeps it in check. Guest guest
Hi Jim,Sorry to hear this. My Md has me taking Allergy Research Buffered C powder. It has Vit C 2135 mg,Calcium 405mg,Magnesium 215mg and Potassium 90mg. The C is Cassava Root source so no corn. Its very important to take all of these and especially the electrolights. I take other mags away from this. Ecological Formulas Tri-salts No C , Cal is 450mg,mag250mg and potassium 99mg. You probably got out of balance with working so hard, sweating and not taking the cal, potassium along with the mag u do. Healing Blessings JoyceSubject: OT: Severe muscle spasm problemTo: Lyme_and_Rife Date: Wednesday, April 14, 2010, 6:48 PM Hi everyone, I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for 6 months... Thanks, Jim
Guest guest
Hi , I checked out Tri Salts, it has calcium, magnesium and potassium.. The only thing I am missing it the potassium, so it think I will get some of it... What is interesting, Tri Salts has 99 mg of potassium same as what all potassium is sold in pill form, this must be the dose these supp companies recommend, yet buying potassium in powder form, the dose is recommended at 540 mg... Am I confused... :-) I just took my first dose of EmergenC that reminded me about, so will see if this helps... Guest guest
Hi Joyce, I think you are correct about me being out of balance on my cal-mag-pot... A lot of sweating yesterday didn't help this situation... And I have a feeling my high amounts of magnesium may also be contributing... I will add more calcium and start adding calcium... Usually I am slow to add new things, but this pain has me adding extra cal and now potassium today! Guest guest
This is soooo hilarious!!! See, we aren't lazy - we're sick! and when we get those good days (or hours) we go for it.Jim, we are all DOOFUS's . Thank goodness we can remind each other when we are. I remember doing some research on potassium (before being diagnosed). There are books out on it being the 'cure all'. I can't remember why the dosage is low and limited? Hmmmm.Remember ALS is probably just Lyme - but, I'm pretty sure you just had DOOFUS, too. ;-) Hang in there,
Guest guest
,It's no mystery: the small dosage for potassium. Look at the bottle of any vitamin supplement for 'normies' and you'll see how ridiculously low the minimum daily requirement is; same for C, mag., B6, etc.I usually just ramp up very slowly, and try to learn about any adjunct requirements that might be needed (like extra B6 and other Bs are necessary when taking L-tyrptophan) I'm thinking there may be some important ratio between calc. mag, zinc and pot. that could mean large doses of one might cause an imbalance. Just my speculation; I'm no doc or nutritionist: just a lymie-lab-rat. =)Be well,Léna This is soooo hilarious!!! Guest guest
Jim, that's good news that you recovered more quickly. I'm finding the same thing this year. I'm not paying dearly for overdoing nearly as much. I like it. :0)  I was a DOOFUS yesterday myself. I was trying to clean up the pool area and completely overdid it. Thank goodness the wasps and bees ran me off when they did. LOL  By the way, anyone know of anything to get rid of wasps and bees? They are really bad and I'm scared to death of them. They were bad last year too but nothing like what I've seen already.  Connie     Hey Joyce,Looks like one day of rest did it!!  I am 80% recovered from the other day and I am heading back out to the chip pile shortly... :-)  I am really pleased about this as my body is recovering much quicker this year... :-) Take care,Jim>> >>> > >> > >>> > > From: Sunshine <jimjax2@ >>> >>> > > Subject: OT: Severe muscle spasm problem>> >>> > > To: Lyme_and_Rife@ yahoogroups. com >> >>> > > Date: Wednesday, April 14, 2010, 6:48 PM>> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > > >> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >> > > >  >> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> > >> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > >> > >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > > Hi everyone,>> >>> > >>> >> > > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > > I have a severe muscle spasm problem that has been brewing now for 6 months...>> >>> > > >> >>> > >>> >>> > >>> >>> > > I often post I have a Lyme knee, this is my right knee and for the most part, DMSO keeps it in check. Guest guest
I agree . Why is it when we get a little energy we think we have to use it up plus a little more? I know I'm really bad about that. It's like we gotta catch up on everything we haven't been able to do for the past month or year. LOL Connie This is soooo hilarious!!! Hmmmm.Remember ALS is probably just Lyme - but, I'm pretty sure you just had DOOFUS, too. ;-) Hang in there, -- Connie

Guest guest
Hi Connie,From what I've gathered (albeit with a brain like Swiss cheese), calcium can block absorption of mag, so that Lymies don't want to overdo calcium. Also read that the chocolate in chocolate milk pretty much cancels out the calcium in same milk. I used to take natural dolomite which was nature's perfect ratio of calcium, magnesium and zinc, until it was revealed that there were impurities in it that could be bad. Now I take calc. mag, zinc combo tabs at night, (bear in mind that I'm post menopausal so i want to take care of my bones if i can) and during the day, take some extra mags, and a potassium once; more when muscles are hurting or if my legs or feet have cramped the previous night, or if it's going to be a hot (sweaty) day. I'm not sure calcium tabs are essential for everyone. A lot depends on what their age, nutrition and other factors. Somewhere, I've got a great book that goes into the interactions and pairings of vitamins and minerals. Now, if I could just remember where it is! =)Be well,Léna So if we take mag do we need to take calcium also or does it matter? I haven't even thought about it till just now that I don't take any calcium. I really don't want to have to swallow another pill.
