Injury Prevention & Conditioning for Canine Athletes

8am: Building a Conditioning Program

Bring your training and performance schedule and learn how to integrate injury

prevention exercises and conditioning into your schedule for the safest and

most advantageous outcomes.

9am: Competition Warm-up and Cool-down Exercises

Many musculoskeletal injuries can be prevented with a proper warm-up and

cool-down. Learn how to avoid " weekend warrior " injuries for both you and your

dog by understanding what the research says about why, how, and when to warm-up,

rehydrate, intake calories, stretch, and cool down.  

10am: Core Stabilization Exercises

All movement begins in the core; the abdominal and back musculature. A strong

core provides a strong anchor for rear limb drive, potentially improving

athletic output while decreasing the probability for injuries.

12:30pm: Front Limb injury Prevention Exercises

Tight and/or weak shoulder muscles can predispose dogs to injuries including

medial shoulder instability (MSI), biceps tendonitis, and wrist/paw strains and

strains. Learn how to increase the strength and length of the shoulder and front

limb muscles to increase muscle output while decreasing the probability of

sports injuries.

2:00pm: Rear Limb Injury Prevention Exercises

Tight and/or weak hip, knee, and ankle muscles can predispose dogs to injuries

including Iliopsoas strains, stifle injuries, and ankle flexor strains and

sprains. Learn how to increase the strength and length of the muscle in the rear

limb to increase muscle output while decreasing the probability for sports

injuries.

3:30pm: The Healthy Way to Stretch

The most important injury prevention measure you can take for your dog is

providing them with a stretching routine that is completed after every bout of

exercise or training. Based on the Maxwell Award winning book, " The Healthy Way

to Stretch Your Dog, A Physical Therapy Approach, " learn an entire post-exercise

stretching routine.
