Guest guest
Tina, Don't concern yourself over Europe banning Stevia. We get used to strange directives coming out of Brussels that are 'good for us'. You would think, if we want to eat a chopped up South American bush then that would be up to us !! It is a thought that Stevia, being 25 times sweeter than sugar, could maybe do some harm to the sugar giants. Pleased to hear you have health food stores in Illinois. We recently visited relatives in South Carolina and none of them knew what a health food shop was but we have visited Trader Joe's in other parts. Wish I'd thought to get some Stevia. My wife used it to sweeten cakes and custards and I used it in my combination of one tea bag of Rooibosch tea (caffeine free) and one of green tea. Use local honey now. Guest guest
I hit the enter button by mistake, sorry. On the back of the bottle of Sweetleaf brand Stevia it says: proprietary blend of Inulin Fiber and Stevia Leaf Extract. 1/4 tsp = 1 tsp sugar 2 Tablespoons - 1 c sugar. " SteviaPlus is a delicious natural supplement that can be added to all foods and beverages. It is stable in heating and freezing...combines the extract from the Stevia Leaf(which is 300 times sweeter than sugar) with a prebiotic nutritional suplement called Inulin Fiber (F.O.S). SteviaPlus is about 10 times sweeter than sugar with a glycemic index of zero and is safe for diabetics. In addition to great taste, SteviaPlus selectively nourishes the friendly bacteria (lactobacillus and bifiobacteria) in the intestines and thus increases the numbe rof these good bacteria to support gastrointestinal health. " I am also trying the Stevita brand - the lable says the serving size is 1/3 tsp. Some people - who are not used to the small amounts needed put too much in and so they get a licorice aftertaste. I have used it in baking and it does well. By the way, since I have been ill I have been taking an OTC capsule with 400mg of Gauifenesin and have experienced less pain, I'd say from my usual of 6 out of a range of 0-10 down to a 2-3 - very little activity and the pain went up to abut 5 after helping a neighbor move some bags etc. I have checked about Gauifenesin and it is used for Fibro. I don't see any reason to not use it along with what I have from Fatigued to Fantastic and the enxymes. I haven't taken that due to I have been coughing and vomiting - so I will experiment with it for a few weeks and report back on how they work together. The regime advised by the proponents of the Gauifenisin is very limited in foods etc, if I remember right. My idea is that this is my body and if I can mix and match treatments I may get a better result. I do want to greet any newbies to the group. I wish you much luck with your disorder. We try to not be too directive, but most of us have had bad effects from prescription meds. Healing, alertness, energy can be had - it may take time to get everything in place. My fibro is complicated with Celiac disease so my diet is low in gluten. I use the SHINE protocol from Dr. Teitlebaum's site and have had fairly good results. The diribose powder helps along with Daily Energy Infusion (a powder mixed in water or juice)and the B-vitamins complex (in a form that is easier to absorb - the Celiac disease causes more absorption problems for me and so I tend to take mega doses of B's so I at least get some. The products can be obtained from the Fatigued to Fantastic site or at most health food stores. I got back from the Surplus store with plans again to juice my fruits and vegetables in addition to eating them either raw or cooked. Since I'm no longer infectious, I can handle the food and use it better. I also have found that taking in enough protein for my body weight - higher weight, more protein. I eat like a 1/3 lb patty of hamburg so that's about 6 oz of protein instead of 4 or maybe 2 oz of cheese or 2-3 large eggs. I also seem to do better getting tryptophan to my brain by doing the moderate protein throughout the day and then having a slow carb about 3 hours after supper. I was at a site for people with alcoholism and this type of eating helps in the healing - healing is long-term you see. Ithelps the body to function better on a daily basis. Guest guest
Hi, I forgot to mention, I use a little bit of organic cinnamon in my fresh lemon drink, and my egg drink. It does add a bit of sweetness, at least enough for me. Hope that helps. If I try to have more than one lemon a day, I get cravings. c. > > > > thanks for this Jill, I did not know that stevia feeds freindly bacteria. Guest guest
I forgot to mention that as a substitute for milk products is soy or rice milk. Rice milk will definitely be the least likely to cause any allergies. Some people are sensitive to soy, but it works well in baking. There are soy cheeses and almond cheeses and rice milk cheeses. There are also ways to make your own if you are up to it. A lot of the regular grocery stores (super markets) carry it now - it may be in a " Healthy Living " or " Natural Food Products " section or it may be with the dairy.) Good luck to you, I am having a bit of fun lately trying our new cuisines - and so I don't panic myself - I consider trying soy or rice milk a new cuisine. - I'm baking some gluten-free items and I got some eggplant so I got a bunch of Greek recipes - gotta love how we can now find great tasting and new- to -me things to eat.
