Guest guest
Quick question for all of you... I was just referred a patient that is having a TPLO next week. The surgeon requested that we be "more aggressive" with the rehab and start the UWTM treatments at 3 weeks post op. My usual protocol if everything is healing well is to put them in around 6 weeks. Please let me know if anyone has tried to put them in at 3 weeks and suggestions on speed and water levels. This is a 7yr 107 lb NM German Shepard. This patient also had a laminectomy at L & -S1 and TL decomression hemilaminectomy in August 2010. I am interested in your opinions and would appreciate your help... Thanks so much...I hope everyone is having a great week! Happy Valentine's Day! Lorey CCRP Kentlands Veterinary Hospital
Guest guest
Hi , UWT is a controlled exercise and safe in that YOU control speed and the water mediates joint reaction forces.I have attached the best paper on the subject.Water level is dependent upon how much weight you want to take off, speed is dependent upon what speed creates the ‘best, non-compensatory’ gait possible.I have also attached a literature review I did on UWT use. Guest guest
-I have found that the sooner we are able to start UWTM, the faster the TPLO rehabs and the happier the dog is earlier on in the recovery period! Initially I usually start with the water level at the greater trochanter and speed is dependent on the patient and their gating in the water. -- Beck, DVM, CCRTBacklund Animal ClinicCanine Rehabilitation and Wellness 2616 South 158th PlazaOmaha, NE 68130Phone Fax
