Prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding

I had a 35 year old woman present with heavy and prolonged bleeding that had

been present for 3 months. Her GP had only just prescribed Norethisterone, which

stopped the bleeding.

The bleeding started after two missed menstrual cycles which followed a period

of high stress.

Her iron is historically low, and I prescribed iron and Viamin C plus

bioflavanoids, as well as Barley Greens to nourish the blood.

When she stopped taking the norethisterone, the bleeding returned, and I

prescribed her Capsella, Alchemilla and Hydrastis, which stopped the bleeding

within 3 days.

I have now lowered her dose of the above mix, and put her on Dong quai,

Alchemilla and Avena, and asked her to continue with the supplements.

My question is: what to expect - yes we have stopped the bleeding, but we want a

normal menstrual cycle.

I'd be grateful for any experiences.

Many thanks

I like Alchemilla and Lamium in these sort of cases - also urtica as

menorrhagia can lead to anaemia which leads to menorrhagia......

also achillea to strengthen blood vessels.

And as Anne says treat stress - I particularly like Vervain - as its

bitterness helps with hormone balance.

And I would be cautious with the Dong quai, it's usually combined with

Paeonia in TCM as it is may stimulate bleeding alone.

I've treated a few of these. The cycles in question could be anovulatory due to

the stress. That may sort itself out withsome Vitex.

As far as the anti-haemorragic herbs go I'd stay with the capsella, lamium and

alchemilla and gradually lower the dosage over a month and see how she responds.

Cheers
