Lori, Re your fundraising request for ADA walk ...I don't want to pop your

balloon but I recently read that a HUGE percentage of money the ADA gets

from

these fundraisers goes for administrative costs; something like under 20%

gets used for research. (which I suppose is better than nothing). As a

diabetic, I used to do the walk too but I'm really down on the ADA now for

their continued advocacy of the " food pyramid " with its bottom layer of

carbs, which raises BGs. When they stop advocating the use of foods that

raise BGs and make a higher percentage of fundraising for research instead

of administrative costs, I'll contribute. Vicki

HI there. thanks for your input. I was unaware of that. is it really that bad

of apercentage? I am going to have to look into that, it is horrible.

although do you think that if they didn't do all the marketing, etc. that

they wouldn't even receive the 20% in the first place?

You make it sound as if you need the $4500 just to get you and your

daughter from New Jersey to Hawaii and back. How will that benefit

the ADA? Do you get air tickets and accommodation if you raise the

$4500? I am afraid I don't see the connection.

Can you offer us one good reason why an international diabetes self-

help group should let itself be used to raise money for a US special

interest group? The amount being asked for is immaterial. Do you have

any idea how many people are out there looking for channels to raise

money by means of small contributions? You didn't give us a good

reason to open up the flood gates just for you nor did you suggest a

simple way for us to check your legitimacy.

If we felt the urge to help fund diabetes research, wouldn't it be

more effective for us to send the money direct to the ADA?

Hi . I may have worded it poorly because the monies are not for me to

travel. I am asking for them to be written out to ADA, not to me. I am sure

ADA has some sort of donated or discounted something regarding this marathon.

they supply the transportation for highly motivated walkers.

hope this helps.

p.s. here is a link to the info....

OK, Lori, I went to that site and it looks good to me but it is still

very vague. It says nothing about participants having to raise $4500

for the ADA before they are admitted to the walk. Where did you get

that from?

You wouldn't get me on a plane to Hawaii on a promise of " some sort

of donated or discounted something " even if I WAS highly motivated.

The walkers are being used to raise big money (diabetic research and

education cannot be done for a few dollars). There has to be a clear

binding contract otherwise all kinds of things could go wrong. Unless

you are planning to sleep on the beach there would have to be a clear

undertaking to provide you with food and accommodation. How does the

ADA get income from this event? Do they sell tickets to the

spectators or is the whole bash used as a platform for sponsor

advertising?

I want to say that it has made me feel good to hear from somebody who

is " highly motivated " - that is a rare experience these days. And I

am sorry to have been so negative about the whole deal but with the

information that we have from you (and from the ADA) there are far

more questions than answers.

Wishing you luck and good walking,
