It is a hidden illness. Not to say that it is the cause of all of our problems, but I have found that treatment for depression makes ACM a little easier to bear.I have to agree with on this. Also, if you have clinical depression once, you will probably have it again at some point in your life. Take the medecine and be glad that you can treat this aspect of chronic illness.

Barbra,

I probably wouldn't be of much help to you as Kennedy is only 20 months old

and I've got a long way to go to get to where you are at, but I was in a state

when she was about 7 months old where I was SICK to death of CHARGE, CHARGE, and

more CHARGE. I just took a month off from the list, tried to limit appointments

and everything as best I could and tried to get some " oomph " back to get back

into it. This summer, when I took the summer off from all appointments and

stopped thinking about everything all the time, and just took the kids and

" went " , that was a really great refresher too. I know everything is really

important and that we have a TONNE of stuff to worry about, but I think it helps

sometimes to try and not think about it all the time and just do other stuff you

wouldn't normally do. I hope you can get out of your funk soon, I know it

really stinks when you feel like that.

Good luck,

Hey guys, I've been depressed lately about 's icky behavior, and the

feeling like I can't take this for another 10 years or so! (he's 12). What

do you guys do to get out of a funk like this? I don't have any appetite

and

just go back to bed in the morning for awhile. Could be hormonal, had labs

drawn today, as I'm 48. That could be why I'm just not handling the stress

as

well right now. Thanks for the ear, Barbra

Jeanne,

Hope C is doing better from her flu shot. Brit just had hers as well. So

you too have nightmares huh? I think many of these CHARGE moms on here do

and how comforting that is to me. Becuz I know if I'm having one of those

days, weeks, I can come on here and everyone can relate. It warms my heart.

Thank you for responding Jeanne. I often look at the pictures of C and Brit.

It was so nice to have met the both of you. Hard to believe it's been 2 yrs

already.Wow! But we love being back here in MI My heart is where my family

is. Though they seem like the " idots " we've all been talking about. A

CHARGEr in their own family and they act and say things strangers would say.

They tend to hurt me more than the strangers do.

Anyway, thank you and I'm thankful I have you and other moms who understand.

Atleast someone does in this world.

Jeanne,

Lots of different views out there about dreams. My own view is that

they are worth paying attention to. They sometimes reflect something we

are not paying attention to inside ourselves. Your own interpretation

of your dreams makes a lot of sense.

Thanks so much to everyone. I feel much better today about Berkeley, and about

me. I don't have the words to express how much your words of encouragement

mean.

Berkeley had her very first OT visit today. They will come to the house once a

week, a real life saver. If only I could get the rest of her doctors to do

this.:) I was really impressed that the OT talked about her potential and not

one word about what she cannot, or will not, be able to do. The goal is to have

her sitting up assisted in 6 months. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Wishing everyone the best,

Michele Hatfield

Re: depression

Jeanne, and all..

Must be the mindset, because it goes both ways.. I never let them

see me cry.. one of the nurses told me that the docs were talking

about me.. saying I was too stoic (sp?).. wondering if I was in

denial, had grasped the reality of my son's disabilities or had a

detachment disorder..

We all have our own ways of coping.. as for those that think there

is something wrong because it's not the way they cope or think it's

the way we should cope.. well what I think of them can't be posted

Everyone,

Talking about all these doctors painting the worst case scenarios for CHARGErs,

and telling moms & dads all these horrible things makes me really upset. The

reason it makes me really upset is: just imagine all the moms & dads out there

without the hope of this list and the others telling them that the doctors are

full of s**t, cause look how well our CHARGErs are doing. I feel really bad for

anyone going through any of this without access to this list. Just another

You give Caitlyn big hugs for me. She is one incredible little girl. I had

to fight back the tears after reading your post about operating on Barney.

Talk about a child who knows how to cope. The doctor's could take lessons

It's absurd to autimatically assume you (as her mother) have a problem

I couldn't agree with you more. This was very apparent to me when Aubrie was

born. I was emotional, upset, crying,

etc. DJ just handled it. I could accept that because I knew how much he loved

her and was worried even tho he didn't

show it the way I did. But my mom was so worried about him cuz he never cried.

She just doesn't get that some people

handle things in ways she doesn't understand -- and that they're still caring,

loving people.

You are so very right. When was born (my CHARGE guy in heaven) NOT ONE

doctor gave us any hope, NOT ONE!!!!!!!! I did not have this list and I did

not have the connection to other CHARGE families. Everyone told us that it

was just a matter of time before he died. It may be 2 weeks, it may be 2

years. He had major heart surgery and a duodenal atresia repair, a g-tube

placed and a Nissen fundoplication and all we were told was that we prolonged

his death.

did die at 6 months of age but I go back in my mind (which is a bad

thing to do) and ask, " What if......?? " If I had been given any hope, would

we have been ALOT more aggressive?? I have to stop the " What if's " because it

would drive me crazy.

Well, then Jillian was born with CHARGE Syndrome 1 year exactly after

died and I was scared to be near her for 2 weeks because I thought CHARGE =

death. At 2 weeks I was put on an antidepressant and instantly feel in love

with her. For my baby girls first 2 weeks, she was deprived of my love

because I was afraid of her because of what all the docs had told me about

CHARGE...

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!! I have this list and YOU GUYS were my hope for

Jillian. Now my baby girl makes me so proud. She's full of attitude and

personality and I wouldn't trade her for any baby in the world. She's alot

milder than but just the thought of a second baby with CHARGE scared

the crap out of me.

When she was 4 months old I was already buying her stuff for Christmas and my

husband told me I should stop because we didn't know what would happen to

her. (That's what the doctors will do to your brain) DON " T LET THEM!!!!!!

I met another mom here in MI a yr ago. Her son has charge and he's 4 or 5.

I've given her so much info of charge and she is in such denial. Her son is

severaly charge and she feels he will be COMPLETELY normal one day. I feel for

her but then agian, you want to shake her into reality so her son can get the

best treatments and she too can have a better life than sitting home doing

nothing.

Any suggestions out there?

Amy,

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. There are 2 families in another province

close to me that want NOTHING to do with the word CHARGE. They are in total

denial (although I've heard 1 is starting to come around). There's not much you

can do to force someone to wake up and get out of the denial stage (Tim, jump in

here if you want) from what I've read/seen/heard. My question is always, " if

mom and dad can't accept them, who else is going to with a msg like that coming

from the child's own parents??? " I always worry about the delays they are

causing by not accepting treatment/therapy as well. But, I've got enough to

worry about on my own I guess I can't get to worked up about it, although it is

sad.

I'm so glad Jillian is doing so well, despite doctors who don't give them a

chance. I wish all those doctors could have a session with Dr. Blake. ARGH!

I'm glad to say nobody really told us anything like that when Kennedy was very

young. I don't know how anyone could deal with it. I think they need to take 5

minutes when they aren't familiar with a certain type of syndrome, and try to do

a bit of digging to find the most up to date accurate information. Any doctor

who says CHARGE=Death has not done their homework and are a disappointment to

their profession.

(T3) is being used quite a lot in depression now. In fact, the quack endo

prescribed the cytomel for that very reason instead of doing a thyroid

exam on me- and ignoring my obvious thyroid symptoms. But even that small

a dosage of cytomel made a difference! I stress again that

there is a high correlation between depression and hypothyroidism. I have

heard that at least 25% of those with clinical depression are hypothyroid.I

even took a lethal od on antidepressants that were said to be working.

I dont know how I ended up in the hospital with tubes all over, and

being in restraints. I lived alone and had no phone. In fact, my disability

is mostly depression- some more now though, but that was the verdict.

Dont recall that time, it may have been sinequan. The

antidepressants would work for a bit, and then not, even though I eas

compliant. I was put on prozac after, and that helped - again for a

while. The childhood trauma, etc. may very well be related. Bottom

line, though- my depression has gotten a 100% better with cytomel and

now natural thyroid which I have been on 3 weeks today. And I have

heard so much about thyroid disease being involved in a lot of mental

illness.Btw, I have had training in counseling and intervention, and

did volunteer work with teenagers .

Sorry it took awhile answering, am not getting all my emails- again

We are cousins, I am also a counselor and did 10 years of volutneer work =with

teens. But gues what?

You got abused again. Sinequan is practically poison. Not an antidepressant of

choice at all any more. It is an archaic drug.. It has so many side effects ans

such littel success with people, I was just telling my b/f last nite, that we

could not beleive they even still make sinequan.

The stuff makes you sleepier than shit.

I'd rather be crazy thant take that stuff.

And desptie 10 of colleg in thsisstuff, and Years of working with other,s

including 4 internships, I'm still inshock that the thyroid has such an effect

on

depresion. It is amaziung and beyond what iI ever expected.

I was suicidal every morning (no intentions of acting on it).

Now, I am thinking of taking it at night. I'm afraid it will wake me up.

My newest technique is to grab anything to swallow, and take all my T meds in

one

swallow.

Start my emailk downloads, and clear a space to make breakfast.

By then, my Ritalin hits me, + I have no desire for food,

but the kitchen is at least clean and my depression is gone.

93F in the desert, -finally, lol! My body temp is 98.3.

Does the outside temp have anything to do with the body temp?

Does anyone know?

Yeh, the chicken or the egg. Nurture vs. Nature. But I gotta deal with

what got dealt to me, ya know?

There are prolly 1,000 of us adult children of narcisssists on line

in groups here at Yahoo, btw.

No doubt.

I'm not downplaying at all what happened to us as we were growing up.

I'm sure that is some cases it's a question of, did all the stress cause

it, or did it cause the stress. Of course, we're all working on that,

I know.

Hi Jan

Im sorry to hear about Jim.You may recall the days when mom would cry all

day long?Well the doctor has her on Paxil, and it has been good for her.The

seroquel toulk most of the crying away, but as far as an anti depressant I

wanted to tell you that mom reacted well to it.It must be very tough to see Jim

so down, My heart goes out to both of you.My heartfelt best    Ron

depression

Yesterday, I was visiting Jim at the nh. It's the first time I have ever seen

him actually depressed.

Everything was as usual earlier in the evening. I took him to an outdoor concert

in a shopping plaza that we go to weekly. I pull up in a hanicap parking space

right next to the concert. The space has been there every week for us. Amazing!

I put the top down on the convertible and we are right amongst the concert. He

enjoys it. We got back to the nh after the concert and he got ready for bed and

fell asleep very fast. It was around 8:30PM. I sit and read a book next to his

bed until around 10PM, because almost like clock work around 9:30PM, he will

wake up and have to go to the bathroom. He will hold on for as long as possible

and he gets very restless. I know if I wasn't there to take him, he would hold

on for a very long time and then release in his diaper and be in a wet diaper

all night. I think this helps to contribute to his frequent UTIs, so I stay to

bring him to the toilet one last time before he falls asleep for the night. He

woke up his usual

time around 9:30PM to go to the bathroom, so I took him in and brought him back

to bed only this time he did not fall back to sleep.

He was saying things like it was time for him to go and that he didn't want to

leave me. I told him it's ok, I'll be fine but I will miss him and I told him I

love him very much and he smiled and said, " thank you " He said he felt like

crying. I told him it's ok to cry, but he didn't cry. He told me he was a coward

and didn't want to leave this world. It went on like this for a good hour and a

half. He didn't want me to walk out of the room and when I told him I have to

go, it was then 11PM, he screamed for me to come back and said, " don't leave! "

Just yesterday, he was joking and laughing with everyone. All the staff was

saying what a great mood he is in. Not just yesterday, but the last few days.

Last night tore me apart to see him like that. How this disease fluctuates! If

this continues he may have to be put on an antidepressent.

I WILL NOT ALLOW ATIVAN and they already have that on their charts at the nh.

What is recommended for LBD as an antidepressant? Is Lexapro recommended? I know

it is not a benzodiazepine. If this kind of behavior continues, I might have to

think of putting him on an antidepressant.
