My experience is the difficulty holding the urine after a prostatectomy. I had a very poor weekend as the hospital had no pads handy and it was the Monday that I was fitted up with a Texas (external) Catheter that I wore for about 6 months before I dried up enough to wear small ladies night time pads (back to front).

I think you need to be prepared for a similar experience with pads available and the odds are that you will not need them - this follows the rule that if you take an umbrella it doesn't rain but if you forget the umbrella it pours down!

Best wishes and many negligable PSAs in the future

Thanks for the info. but I just can't quite visualize the thing. I do know all about Foleys and I hate the damn things. Hopefully I won't need either kind after tomorrow but you never know---- Metcalf wrote:

External catheter - This is a sheath that connects to the catheter and is changed daily. It sticks to the penis and has to be soaked off. I found I had to choose one that could easily be parted from the tube so normal urination can take place - with an added extention directing flow was easier. A bit of a time consumer but cleaner than pads and less painful than a Foley!

Thanks for answering . What is a Texas external catheter ????? I have been wearing a Foley indwelling catheter for 8 weeks and I hate the dreaded thing. I can't sleep on my back anymore and my penis feels like it has been torn up by a cat.I'm about to find out Thursday morning at 9AM how this deal will turn out. Thanks again --------- Metcalf wrote:

That whole deal sounds outof it for me. The bladder sphincter must not be inflamed or swollen in my case but it has not healed enough to go without a foley for an extra week. Your description of that thing reminds me of the "drain tube' and bag they had to drain my incision. When I left the hospital the nurse pulled it out. The tube was about 6 inches long and was buried in my stomach(gross) The incision is healing nicely except at the place where that stupid drain tube was. At that point I have I have severe bruising(hematoma) and it looks bad. Is this common?? Will those bruises go away??Any Idea?? Thank you again for your help at this time------------- derek robinson wrote:

No,there was no pain, they use a very sharp tube to make a tiny hole,a bit like a cork borer, thenthread a very fine plastic tube down thru the tube into the bladder,I think it is a kidneycatheter, they withdraw the tube along the catheter, attach a tap to the catheter, then attach alegbag to the tap.It is used when the urethra or bladder sphincter is very swollen or inflamedwhen a catheter could do damage.--- jerry Wenger wrote:> That suprepubic catheter installed thru the abdomen sounds like hell.
