Guest guest
>> In short, I'm doing what my doctor and I think is the healthiest thing for me.... Sandy< And it sounds like a good plan to me, Sandy. We all are different and this disease,in addition to being progressive in nature, manifests differently for each of us. I'm not looking to get from insulin to no meds overnight, or maybe even ever. I know that I have to take it in steps. People like Sam and Meenie give me lots of hope that getting from insulin and/or meds to diet/exercise only *can* be done and that the more I embrace this possibility, instead of feeling that it is out of reach, the closer I will get to realizing it. >>I'm not talking about you, Meenie, but I feel there's a certain prejudice from some on the list towards anyone who feels they have to take medication. There's an unstated, but ever so clear superior attitude, that dieting is hard work, and those of us who have to take medication are just not up to the task and somehow inferior. Sometimes I feel like I'm on an Atkins list, and I thought I signed up for a diabetes list.<< I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't think there is a superior attitude from anyone. I don't feel the least bit looked down upon because I am using insulin to control my diabetes. I don't do Atkins, nor do many of the members here. I am finally doing as you are...learning what foods I can eat and which ones I can't or must restrict. My insulin dose came down a little today. That's enough for me, today. I think every person on this list is thankful that medications are available and that they are getting better. The message that I hear, rather than being superior, is simply to do absolutely everything you can do for yourself. That's not something I can hear too many times. I'm still watching my carbs.... just not having quite as much protein and quitting with the pepperoni and pork rind snacks and the real whipped cream :-) To be honest, I wasn't feeling well on a diet so high in protein and fat. I've been leaning toward being a vegetarian for years, and what I was eating wasn't making me feel well. I haven't made any radical changes, though. Not running out and buying candy bars and chips, etc. :-) I'm not looking to get from insulin to no meds overnight, > or maybe even ever. I know that I have to take it in steps. Hey, I would be thrilled not to have to take meds, but it wasn't working for me. I'm really glad that you're able to reduce your insulin. > I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't think there is a superior > attitude from anyone. I don't feel it from everyone, but I have felt it, and I don't think I'm alone there. However, I'm glad you don't feel that way. I've also found that there are a lot of nice people on this list.
