The dietitian/diabetes educator I saw said only half a banana, which doesn't give you enough potassium. Half a banana is one fruit... I love bananas, but I have pretty much given them up because they're too high in carbs. Sandy
Guest guest
> One of the first things I was told after becoming diabetic was " never drink > your sugar " Better to eat that orange than drink the juice. That's why I only drink 4 oz., Meenie... and I do eat oranges or I used to. Lately, I haven't eaten any fruits until I got some apples, and they made my blood sugar go up. I didn't eat a lot of them either. That's what convinced me to go on the medication. Sandy

Guest guest
>>, I was asked by Kaiser to sign a no fat pledge, at that time my insulin use was 80U a day, I ate no spread at table, gravies, sauces, gas grilled my dinner. In a few weeks my insulin use went to 28U a day, I went on glyburide 2.5mg. My point in this is the influence of fat intake, as well as abdominal fat on insulin resistance. On no fat I lost weight, was forced off oral to diet. I had to curb the carbs, almost nothing in the starch group, I turned to fruit. Now having orange juice is a whole other thing from eating an orange, you avoid the fiber and since it is already prrocessed it will cause a sugar high. People take it for hypoglycemic shock. I'm having pears, 5#/$, 4 days on the counter and they are perfect. Kiwi fruit, mango, papaya, strawberries in season, grapes, banana (for potassium) . when I was on a diuretic my doc said eat a banana a day. Now I am on diet only. Sam<< Sam, I'm watching fats, too, though not fanatically. Like I said, I'm not doing Atkins or any diet from a book. I'm simply doing my best to eat healthily and take in as few carbs and a greatly lowered amount of fat. If it's make a choice between carb and fat right now...I'd ditch the carbs first. My main purpose right now is to break a 40 year carbohydrate addiction and beat the cravings and viscious cylce of carb addiction. So far, so good : ) Rome wasn't built in a day! Guest guest
, nobody loved carbs more than I. I would go to lunch and 2 of us would have 3 baskets of bread. Hushpuppies, pancakes, pizza, I gave it up as i saw what it did to my sugars. I still have a new bottle of glyburide, my pet oral, but just don't need it. I go as low fat as I can, but nuts and chocolate squares becon to me. I had them around as my wife liked them, now they are a temptation to me. She had the flu, and is slowly getting her appetite back, she really can't eat much. I just started adding soft vegetables zucchini, tomatoes to our meat an potatoes. Dinner in 12 minutes. She won't look at fruit or salads yet, used to be big on it. Sam

Guest guest
everyone is entitled to > their opinion, your's is great for you, stop belittling these people here Thanks, Carol.... that's how I feel. Guest guest
There seems to be a misunderstanding that moderate carb automatically means Atkins or high protein. It means only that you limit your carbs to what your body needs. We need little protein, less with advancing age. Don't read something into the message that isn't there. Guest guest
, I know you don't do Atkins, but you might like to try the induction diet that he suggests in order to break that carb addiction. It only lasts two weeks (and actually usually takes only about a week to break the cravings for carbs) . You just eat 20 grams of carbs for 2 weeks. The first 3 days you will crave carbs, the 4th or 5th day you wake up with the cravings all gone. It was like a miracle for me. For some it takes the whole 2 weeks but for most it takes about 4 days. Then it's easy to plan the carbs you really want and bypass those that seem to be calling you Meenie .. If it's make > a choice between carb and fat right now...I'd ditch the carbs first. Guest guest
I hate to disagree but if everyone knew what was right for their own body, we wouldn't be here on this list today. Atkins is a very strict form of low carb. Not everyone can do it, you're right. I can't always do it, so I know thats true. But control of carbs is what will keep your bg's in line . Thats a fact. Anything you eat will indeed affect your blood sugar, but nothing will affect them to the extent that carbs do. Guest guest
This is a reaction from Sam, not a flame. He is getting upset and I think the best thing to do would be to drop this line and go back to what we're here for - the exchange of information. We can't all see things the same way, but we can all work toward the same end - controlling diabetes. If some of us don't appreciate what is offered, my suggestion is hit delete, take a deep breath and move on to the next post. I don't think anyone has meant to offend. Guest guest
Sorry but I have to disagree that it is not a flame. Sam is famous for his flames and it has gotten him kicked off of several lists and bb about diabetes. When he is not agreed with he becomes nasty. Nasty reactions + flame.
