Guest guest
Hi Pam Where are you? When I was first diagnosed with bronchi in my early 20's I was told then daily clearance is the key . I didn't really listen and lost an upper lobe of my lung at 28. It really is true, daily clearance and nebuliser ( albuterol can deplete your potassium so I eat bananas. My weekly chest percussion was limited to 90 per lifetime ???? I was often too tired to do it myself . My insurance covered( rented ) it for a year and I had tonrecord the hours. Now its mine and travelswith me as carry on luggage to the UK and Europe. Umcka is derived from an african geranium , shortens colds and loosens phlegm YEAH , no side effects , comes in all formats , google it , its distributed by nature's way.I also take turmeric to reduce inflammation.Hope this helpsSubject: trying to support a friend)To: bronchiectasis Date: Wednesday, June 3, 2009, 8:55 AM Hi,I don't have bronchiectasis, but I have a close friend who has just been diagnosed with it. I have referred her to this group and I think she has joined. I have been lurking around reading some of the posts. I am sad that each of you have to endure this disease, but have great admiration and respect for your tenacity through it all. I can see that out of necessity you have become your own advocate for the best lung health possible. I have several questions. We live in a rural area, the nearest "big city" is almost an hour away. From what I have read, it is important to get to a good Dr. ASAP when lung problems arise, especially bronchial infections. I realize that having a good pulmonary Dr.is essential, what do others who don't live in an urban area do about not having having a pulmonary Dr. nearby? When you are sick and in need of your Dr.'s care and expertise, who can drive an hour each way to make a Dr.. visit? (especially in winter weather) Do most health insurances cover the vest and how effective is it? I am interested in learning more about how Umcka is used in keeping the airways clear. Is it a supplement? Is it in liquid or capsules? How often should it be taken? Are there side affects from taking it? Thanks in advance for your input.KR

Guest guest
I use turmeric in cooking , salad dressings as a capsule and in a good sinus vindaloo clearing curry. I dare any bug to live in that !!!. re The Vest I don't know how advanced your friends bronchiectasis is but I was prescribed chest percussion from a physiotherapist from the start and then learned to do it myself. I'm not sure about the cost of the vest , I think about $20,000. Contact Hill Rom they are REALLY helpful and will work with you. Before I had The Vest I've also used a $100 massage belt ( with heat) strapped around my upper and lower thorax and tipped over about 4-6 pillows ( $19,900 cheaper ! ) This group is a mine of collective information , and a great resource for you and your friend. Guest guest
thanks for the replies. We are in northern MI, (the lower peninsula) our nearest city where there is a variety of pulmonologist to chose from is Traverse City. It is about 60 miles away. Grand Rapids MI is a large metropolitan area, many to chose from there, but is is 90 miles away our concern is that when she is ill she will need to see a Dr. right away, so she should have one near by. (Closer than 60 or 90 miles) Does anyone else live in a rural area? If so how do you deal with your broncho without a pulmonologist in the immediate area? My friend needs to find a good Dr. that is familiar with broncho, so there is a plan of action in place to deal with this. Should clearing be done daily, weekly or what? Thanks for your replies.
