Being on social security I have to make very careful selectons since It will take me some time to save some money in order to get a new mattress sett, my old one is incredibley uncomfortable, it was a pillow top and it is 8 years old and with 7 pre arranged pillows I still do not get a good nights sleeps and that is with three different types of sleep medicaton. Anyones advise would be sincerley appreciated., Thank you, may you have true joy, happiness and better health, Sincerly
Guest guest
, I'm 59, and one of the " wise " things I've discovered is about mattresses. And what I've learned is that what is good for someone else may not be good for you. The best person to ask this question is your Dr. Everyone's pain is different; it's their own, and is caused by what illnesses they have, where, how badly, etc. So even if someone has the exact same illnesses as you do, the same mattress may not be the best for both of you. I have fibro, several types of arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. We chose a pillow top mattress because we laid on all the mattressses in the store; I even had my husband roll over and just about bounce on them! And I laid on the ones I liked the best for at least 5 minutes. That's a lot different from a full night's sleep. I also laid on a memory foam mattress, an air mattress, a waterbed, and different firmnesses. I like highly baffled waterbeds the best because they also mold to your body and you can set the tempeerature. A warm mattress does wonders for my pain. But because of the type of illnesses I have, I have a very hard time getting out of it - and my husband hates them. Since making the mistake of buying the wrong mattress, I've learned that I should have bought the firm mattress, albeit the highest quality one I could find. There's a big difference between a cheap firm mattress and a more expensive one. But your Dr. knows your illnesses, and he/she should also be able to tell you what till give you the best night's sleep, as well as be best for what you have. From a price standpoint, waterbeds are your best buy for the $. But they may not be best for you. Memory foam mattresses have come down in price over the past few years, but the best ones are still expensive. So my advice would be to ask your Dr. If he/she doesn't have an answer for you, I'd suggest buying the best firm mattress you can - not the hardest, but a good, firm one. You can always add a memory foam top, a feather top, or other top if it turns out it's not the best. But if you choose the others, you can't always add something to make it firmer. I'd also suggest you not buy an extra thick mattress. Sheets can be impossible to find, and are more expensive, and I don't think the extra thickness does anything except make it harder to get up on the bed! My last suggestion is if you have a friend with the type mattress you're thinking of getting, ask if you can stay overnight and try hers out one night. While one night won't give you all the information you need, it will certainly help you rule it out if it's not right. If you can borrow a good air mattress, do so and give it a try. Do you see where I'm going with this? You're right; a mattress is a long-term investment. I'm now stuck with an extra-thick, pillow top mattress that needs 22 " deep sheets. I don't think they make them! So we are saving to buy a new mattress to use with the existing box springs. I learned the hard way. The most comfortable mattress in the store was wrong. And my Dr. told me to get a firm mattress. Since then, I've stayed a week at a relative's who has a firm mattress, one of the best brands. My Dr. was right. How I wish I'd listened! Good luck of finding the best for you. Dix SHELLYM wrote: I am now in great need of a new mattress, I cannot decide between the sleep number and the memory foam. Guest guest
Hi Rhee, Congratulations on your new mattress!! I am so happy that you got one, and one that is working great for you! That is so awesome that you got a good night's sleep and your pain level is down to tolerable!! I can't remember the last day that I had just tolerable pain! I really am so happy for you. When you said that you rock and humm to help you cope with the pain, I chuckled, I do the same thing! I think it helps get your mind off of the pain for a few. Please keep me informed of how you are doing on your new mattress, cuz I will be in the market soon for a new one. I hope only good nights' sleep are ahead of you, and only tolerable pain, nothing worse!! Huggs, Sandy
Guest guest
Rhee, I am happy to hear that the memory foam is working for you :-) I also have an increase in pain around a certain time of the month...it goes from just above unbearable all the way up to " I want to die right now " level about 2-3 days before it starts. I rock, humm, hold my breath, different breathing/relaxation breaths, you name it..I've probably done it or do it....lol Lee Rhee <rhees911@y...> wrote: > Well, we decided on a memory foam mattress.
