Re-weaving our tradition

A Seminar on the Ancient Greek Sources of our Western Herbal Tradition

With Vicki Pitman, M. Phil., MURHP

Venue: Regents College, Regents Park, London

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 3 March, 2000 (Doors open

9.30)

Topics will include:

a.. Historical and philosophical context of the Hippocratic Corpus, 450-350 BC

b.. Holism: concepts and practice, e.g. pneuma, and humoural paradigm,

regimen, herbal energetics and uses

c.. Herbal lineage: some herbals from ancient to Renaissance time, including

Dioscorides' Materia Medica

d.. Survey of medical practices after Hippocrates: the Hellenic world, Galen

and medical " sects " , medicine in later antiquity

e.. Possibilities and problems: ancient use for a modern world?

Vicki Pitman, gained an M.Phil. in Complementary Health Studies from Exeter

University in 1999 with her dissertation on Sources of Holism in the Hippocratic

Corpus, recently published as The Nature of the Whole, Holism in Ancient Greek

and Indian Medicine.

Vicki began her studies in the early '80s and has been a herbalist since1990

(Master Herbalist Diploma & East-West College of Herbalism Certificate) and is

member of the Unified Register of Herbal Practitioners (www.urhp.com). She has

undertaken additional training in Ayurveda with Dr. Vasant Lad, Frawley,

and the International Academy of Ayurveda, Pune. Her strong interest in history

compelled her to research ancient sources of the Western Healing tradition.

Cost:

£50 URHP members, £60 other herbal and healthcare professionals, £40 students

Refreshments available all day in the College refectory.
