Scientists had damaged these cells in the brain of the animals by using a drug which selects dopamine cells only. The monkeys then had difficulty moving about so the damage was quite extensive and yet the ones that got the vigorous execise started to recover and move about normally. Brain scans showed that their brains were rebuilding the lost dopamine cells returning the brain to normal function.
