Guest guest
Sheryl, Very very good luck tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you as you meet for the IEP again. We also have struggled quite a bit with the district and it is no fun. It's wonderful to hear of signing 'more'. Your language goals sounded very reasonable and it is surprising they weren't accepted. It didn't sound like you were asking for 'too much'. It almost sounded as if you weren't asking enough. But then, I have a 13 year old daugher also who seriously needs appropriate language intervention. I'll be thinking good thoughts tomorrow. , Mom to Kendra, and Camille Portland, OR
Guest guest
Sheryl, Wow, that's unbelievable that you have to go through that meeting again. It all sounds so scary...I wish you the best of luck and I don't blame you for getting blunt with them. Hi everyone. I have been pretty scarce lately as things have been hectic here. Just a brief update on what is going on. Feb 11 had a 4 1/2 hour IEP meeting to once again write goals for (taking into consideration all of the new info we have learned this year). We agreed to focus on one critical area and that is her communication. We wrote one goal for expressive language, one for receptive language and one for auditory training. Left the meeting feeling really good and we were set to reconvene on Feb 21 to discuss programming and placement. The reason for the gap was to allow the school district to consider the new goals when they looked into where they would be met. For once I was feeling good about things and looking forward to finalizing this disaster. Well, over the course of the next week or so, things have fallen apart. Any progress that has been made has fallen by the way side. There have been three confrontations ( I try not to let this happen but things have escalated to that point at times) about different things going on. I was even told by the teacher that I need to realize that I can't always have things my way and that I need to GIVE a little. I quickly reminded her that I have given to the point that I have compromised my daughter right out of an education. I have allowed them (through compromises) to take her from full inclusion to complete isolation and now it is going to end. I informed them that I was done with compromise and I am now going to start getting my way on a few things whether they like it or not. I know I am not supposed to be so blunt but I was at my wits end that day. Oops, I said brief....Well, now tomorrow's meeting is back to doing the same thing we did on the 11th. The AEA feels that our goals are not legal or they didn't handle them legally and we need to readdress them all over again. This keeps them from having to discuss placement as they know we won't get that far. I caught wind of this and have been trying to get answers to what they mean by this and why we are going over the same things we did last time. I finally got some answers tonight around 8pm. I don't agree with the logic but I have to go with this one. I was also informed this evening that the districts attorney could very well be coming to the meeting tomorrow. Mine cannot attend but an advocate from our P & A is at least able to attend. Good thing about theirs attending is that he will keep the we won't and I cant's to a minimum and they won't be attacking me like they usually do. But on the good side, seems to be doing well with her signing. She figured out what another one is and uses it evertime she eats....more. I hadn't used that one with her for a long time and one night I had let her tube get low and nothing was going in. She pointed to the food and signed more. I was so excited. She's getting there and will use what she knows when she has too. It is so hard because she has gestured for so long, she wants to fall back on that instead of the signs that she does know. Well, thanks again for letting me vent. I needed to do that before the meeting in the morning. Wish me luck as I am going to need it again. Guest guest
Sheryl- Communication goals sound pretty straight forward to me. Why is the district bawking? Is placement the issue, or communication? Sally(, 18) Message: 10 Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2000 00:12:23 EST From: sdoolit272@... Subject: Still struggling with 's IEP Hi everyone. Guest guest
Sally, The problem is both communication and placement. The other problem is making sure everything is legal. Monday's meeting was a CYA. We spent three hours going over all of the old goals, reviewing the new ones and there was insistence that we modify a few of the old ones so we had to add three more. One is for behavior, another for community mobility/socialization and they wanted to keep a vocational goal. Now that we have the goals in place, the district is going to take the next three weeks making their decision for placement. Then on March 13, we meet again for me to hear what they have to say and we will either agree on the placement or go back to battle. The meeting we had wasn't that bad. I still feel it was a waste of time and a delay for placement but not much I can do about that. The tone of the meeting was good as they had their attorney there. I just can't believe that I have to attend IEP's with an attorney in the room to keep things at peace.
